Rock Creek Cattle Company revisited
« on: August 28, 2014, 10:51:42 AM »
As many of you know, RCCC is one of my favorite places to play. I finally made it back and was thrilled to find out that my first two impressions were not wrong. It was a little softer this time around due to a ton of rain falling the previous two days. Even with the rain, it was AWESOME.

The green sites could be the best and most imaginative I have ever played. One hole stood out and that was #15. I played with a few friends one of which did not like Streamsong Blue because he 3 putted five times for par. So on this hole, he drives the green again. He is center left above the big mound in middle and short of the mound in back and pin is far right. I am 15 feet off the left of the green with the large mound in between me and the cup. I hit a spinning 60* wedge that hit the top of the mound, checked and drifted toward the hole for a tap in birdie. My buddy 3 putted again for par and exclaimed "this is why this hole stinks. I drive the green and should be rewarded with a birdie."

I asked him where that is a rule. A driveable hole needs to defend par still and that is why that green is so great.

RCCC is just a ton of fun and I could play there day in and day out and never tire of the place. Speaking of tires, all four maintained contact with the ground this time too.

Jim,

Good story. I don't know that any of the great short par 4s guarantee a birdie just because one drives the green.

Any overturned carts this time?

Last line of post mentions all four tires firmly on ground this time. But thanks for asking. Oh and I didn't drive. ;)

Jim -

I'm jealous!  RCCC is a very special place.

#15 is one of the best holes on the course in my opinion.  In my three plays I was able to drive the green once.  I also found that if I didn't hold the green from the tee, my odds for birdie were much better laying up to 100 yards.  Just an awesome green complex.

Jim, I'm curious what you feel you've learned as far as your own powers of observation and how those relate to your judgments, in particular your first impressions. What's different or new about this course this time around?

Easily one of the best photo tours on here.  Very jealous of anyone who gets to Rock Creek.

The biggest difference in the two times I visited was the firmness of the course. The greens were different as well, being a more mature course will do that. #7 was a lot different as last time I busted driver all the way down the hill and had an SW approach, but since there was standing water on the fairway, I did not get any runout and had an 8 iron left. I also knew that the greens would be more receptive since they were softer and could attack more pins.

I also noticed the fourth green was not as challenging as the first time around. It is a little softer in contours, although still very challenging and fun. I love watching shots bounce and roll some good, some not so much.

I assume RCCC is meant to play firmer and faster, right?

Jim,

Thanks for the report.

I think RCCC is just awesome. I liked it better than Pacific Dunes (another Doak), for example.

#15 is a neat hole. It's fun to launch a few long drives after working your way uphill for the first nine.

So many great holes out there. #5, #7, #8 (just as pretty as anything on an ocean), #10 (!!), #13 (awesome from the ~240 way back tee), #15, and #16 (!!!!)-#17-#18 is an incredible finish.

RCCC is in the middle of freaking nowhere...but it is an incredible spot and well worth the trip.

It is meant to be played firm and fast and generally is. They had a deluge of rain recently which soften the course. I was curious as to how much fun would be lost is the softer conditions but it was still a blast. Again, the greensites are among the best I have played. Just an outstanding place.
