They're still golfing as I type this, but Rory has assumed control.  All of this back and forth begs this question:

Will this rank among the most entertaining majors ever?  Not the best or the most memorable perhaps, but this has been phenomenal golf theater even if on a decidedly average stage. Thoughts?

No.  First of all, nothing will ever compare to the 86 Masters.  Second, I hope I'm not alone in my belief that Valhalla is a Gawdawful golf course that represents just about everything bad in golf architecture.   It's simply putrid and I don't understand how anybody could gush over anything to do with that dump.

Is there a cure for golf dyspepsia?

The 1993 PGA was a pretty good one with Azinger beating Norman and Faldo down the stretch. But this year's PGA was great to watch. I don't care what anyone thinks of Valhalla, it has produced some fantastic tournaments. At the end of the day, I'll take an exciting tournament at a lesser course than a snooze fest at the best course.

There's a lot of gushing coming from the players in these post-round press conferences.

Those of us on an internet discussion board know better than the players who played the course. We can watch a tournament and analyze it better than players who play a course 20 times.

Good.  I'm glad you understand.   I'm sure they love it because "it's all right there in front of them" and because the rough is perfectly uniform a d lush and the greens are simultaneously fast and also hold.  For the most part, those guys know jack, and on the whole, they're basically clueless.   That's the truth.

Great, you seem to know best.

Weren't there 9 players within 1 shot of each other on the back 9 of Sunday's round at Shinnecock in 1986?

David, I would encourage you to play a round there. There are several people on the board I have played with who do not agree with your sentiments. Is Valhalla top 100 in the world? I wouldn't claim that, but it is a great day of golf, and the staff there do an exceptional job. I think dump might be a harsh description.

Muirfield in 2002 was pretty jam packed too. Another strange decision as they sent Lavet and Els off in one group and Appleby and Elkington in another during the playoff.

I thought the final 36 holes was a tremendous show, full of back and forth and so on. During Saturday's fun, I was trying to remember the last PGA Championship so compelling, aside from McIlroy's coming-out party two years ago. Maybe the one at Riviera in 1983 where Sutton won by a shot and Nicklaus charged to finish second. That was a great final round. This was a weekend of sustained brilliance.

For best major ever, at least in my lifetime, it's either the 1986 Masters, 1977 British Open or 1960 U.S. Open.

The finish would have been interesting today if they didn't have rough protecting balls from rolling into the water hazard on 18.

Would have been even more interesting if Phil's chip found the hole.

Overall a good entertaining weekend of golf.

I remember the most entertaining for me being British Opens.  1995 was when Daly had to go back out for a 4-hole playoff when Rocca holed a bomb.  Vandevelde needed about an hour to play the 72nd hole.  Stewart Cink, by all accounts a terrific gent, capitalizing when Watson's 8-iron tumbled a little long.  Without a doubt, a Watson win that year would have been the most impressive sporting feat to me ever.

One of the most exciting major finishes I ever saw (on TV) was the Masters Bob Goalby won.  Spectacular golf by both guys down the stretch.  One moment I'll never forget: DiVicenzo was leading by one, putting from 4 feet or so on the 71st green for birdie... while Goalby had hit a long iron on 15 that just cleared the water and stopped about 15 feet from the pin.  The golfing gods smiled on us, because both were putting at the exact same time, and CBS (?) showed both on split screen.  Roberto rolled in his birdie putt... right while Goalby made his for eagle.  Bob had to make a semi-miracle par on the 72nd as well.

Agree totally that 1986 is on the list, right near the top.  Exciting/entertaining does not have to mean all players perform flawlessly.

Anyone remember the 1993 Open at St Georges.
Faldo lead after 3 and shot 67 to lose to Greg (I was in awe of myself) Norman - who did play incredible golf and shot 64. Masters champion Langer was there playing with Greg and shot 67 with an OB ball at 14. Pavin was terrific too.

Miles better than today - which was good but with soft greens making it much less interesting to watch.

Mike,

didn't Norman hole out from a bunker on the 3rd? I also remember his comment after his 2nd round at Turnberry when he shot 63 in a gale 'I hit some shots out there today that even I was impressed with'. Never shy about coming forward our Greg ;)

Yes, the quality of the greens took a lot of excitement out of the picture, but this event at least kept people awake.  Terry is right, rockem, sockem....

The best majors I have seen for entertainment are

77 Turnberry
86 Masters
99 Carnoustie

HM: 93 Sandwich & 86 Shinny

Greg holed it out of the bunker left of three at Turnberry in 86.

I played that day Greg shot 63. He missed from 4 feet at 17 and three putted 18.
That round was unfathomably great to everyone who played that day. The course was brutally difficult.

I got bored abnd went to bed with a couple of hours to go.  The balance between player and course was too far in favour of the player.  You need to see a few holes where players are making bogeys, rather than just seeing who holes the most putts for real excitement.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

It was great a fantastic leaderboard and great fun to watch. The one thing that bothered me was the hard-packed bunkers which allowed all balls to feed to the middle. I know this was due to the rain, but Rory's approach shot on 17 from the flat middle of the bunker was SO much easier than he deserved based upon the tee shot he hit.

Hell, this couldn't even hold a candle to the Tiger/Bob May PGA at the same venue IMO.  Was there really any surprise in Rory closing the deal and Phil and Rickie coming up short?  OK, maybe Phil being in the hunt at all was a litte surprising. Guys hitting flop shots off thin muddy lies in the gloaming? More like a pretty good but not truly great Romantic Comedy where you know he's gonna get the girl in the end IMO.  The leaderboard was really good, but the drama ended a couple holes early.  I did like the way they let Rory play up so they could get it in.  Hell they should do that on every hole all day long if they're going to insist on 5 1/2 hour death march Medal Play.  As it stands the only thing most PGA events are good for is as an Ambien supplement.  Is Fowler now officially the Best worst dressed Evangelical to never win a Major?
