PGA M.E.M.E. Most Entertaining Major Ever?
« on: August 10, 2014, 08:20:32 PM »
They're still golfing as I type this, but Rory has assumed control.  All of this back and forth begs this question:

Will this rank among the most entertaining majors ever?  Not the best or the most memorable perhaps, but this has been phenomenal golf theater even if on a decidedly average stage. Thoughts?

Nice to see the PGA of America has no ffing idea of how to finish an event
what a farce of a finish

Valhalla is a great design for this tournament.  GCAers may abhor it, but for this event it is perfect.

I'd like to disagree with you Jeff, but all the facts are on your side, me thinks.

They pleased exactly no one, and simply delayed each other.
The PGA is VERY lucky Rory didn't simply opt to putt out tomorrow.
Hitting up on tee shots on 18 made sense-Phil and Rickie were waiting anyway-after that?????
I guess officials are entitled to a choke too ;) ;D ;D

It was a bush league finish in terms of the officiating, but that will be quickly forgotten, even if Phil complains in his presser. The attendant drama will remain vibrant.

What drama? The tournament was over, when Rory holed the putt on 17. There have been other majors being decided on the last hole or by someone chipping in. THAT is drama.

It was wildly entertaining. I especially loved the final hole. It was a far better advertisement for quick play and good etiquette than all the pathetic While We're Young commercials combined, even if Mickelson wasn't thrilled.

In my view, they did the right thing in how the finish was conducted under the circumstances.  And, I think all the players involved took the high road in their comments about how the finish was conducted.  Even that most say Rory had his choice to say, I won't play the bunker shot until tomorrow, or even just opt not to tee off, he had the public relations and savvy to know he would have been thought of negatively in most quarters, including the PGA officials that have a lot of costly logistics expenses to do it again tomorrow, and the inconvenience of technically making Phil and Ricky wait until tomorrow and probably Stenson as well.  I think all showed admirable good sportsmanship and public comment smarts, no matter if they do feel differently deep down.   There were a few junctures where Rory or even Phil and Ricky could have said, I can't see any longer and made the show screetch to a halt.  Good on all of them.
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

The 2011 Masters was pretty awesome. But this one gave us a better champion and it was guys throwing hammers for 4+ hours. I don't think anyone missed a single shot until Stensons 3 putt on 14.

Throwing darts on soft greens doesn't make a major memorable imo.   Norman/Tway was wire to wire.  That was back with persimmons drivers.  I thought i was watching the Bob Hope this week

The thread title covered all majors and Nicklaus' win at ANGC in 1986 was still the most exciting major championship I've seen.  The 86 PGA is known for Tway's bunker shot although it should be known for Norman blowing a big lead in a Monday finish.  The 93 PGA at Inverness with Azinger, Norman, and Faldo was really good.

Hitting up on 18 tee was appropriate as it saved some time while Phil and Rickie waited.

I find it very hard to believe that Phil and Rickie WAITING while the last 2 hit up to the green sped up the TOTAL time taken in any way, and there clearly was some confusion on the second shot.

Weren't you five years old in 1986? I know you love to critique courses you haven't played, but I never expected you to also start discussing tournaments you didn't see. You continue to find new ways to dazzle me.

I watched video of the 86' PGA many times.  It is safe to say most on the DG didn't see this weeks PGA in person, but they commented.  It's like you describing the conditions at Pinehurst to someone in detail, yet you weren't there.  People in glass houses.  The funny thing is I could watch something on TV and be able to dissect it better than you playing the track 20 times.

The confusion was that Phil/Rickie only thought that Rory/Bernd would hit up on the tee shots, and were informed after they had hit their second shots that Rory/Bernd would also hit up on their second shots.

It's the PGA's fault that they had the tee times set up so late so that a weather delay caused this issue, but I see no issue with what the players did on 18.

Norman choked in 86' at the masters.  I'm not saying 86' PGA was the greatest.  Just saying it was a great finish.  Lets stick with PGA's.

Probably, but at least my dissection wouldn't refer to the golf course as a "track."

Nice call in Reply 22. We should definitely restrict the discussion of Most Entertaining Major Ever to only include PGA Championships.

This is all instant analysis and just for fun. Other majors had more drama. Others had a more significant win for more significant figures. Still others were contested under more exacting conditions. But this one was Rock Em Sock Em Golf Robots for four days. Good fun, great winner.
