The domed surfaces are not original Ross (the result of years of topdressing and shaving off of the surrounding edges by Rees Jones)

I wonder if Doak would rank Pinehurst a 10, wiithout the modern (non-Ross) greens?

The biggest complaints will be in regards to the green speeds. Pinehurst's will be running very slowly by US Open and even Tour standards. The irony is that getting them faster would make them nearly unplayable, but most of the pros won't think of that part of the bigger picture. They'll simply be frustrated about having such a hard time judging speed correctly.

Yes, they will complain about how slow the greens are uphill while at the same time complaining about balls trickling off the slopes on the side. Does anybody remember when Payne Stewart hit the winning putt how Johnny Miller was going on about how it was such a slow putt? I didn't even think it was that much uphill.

I doubt the original Ross greens were boring.

Delineation of waste area from bunker, ala Dustin Johnson at Whistling Straits, although hopefully the USGA will moot the issue with a rules official in each group ready to offer a speedy opinion if asked

This.

I hate the idea of every group having their very own personal ruling official.  I doubt that it will be a blind draw and some officials will get the celebrity groups with massive TV coverage while others get the non-contenders.  Every official will have a different opinion and be subject to the natural influences of human nature.  A much better solution would be one official per hole so at least some consistency could be established.

I do hope that players are allowed to question a ruling of their personal official and bring in a second opinion.

This is the US Open and much like the World Series, Super Bowl or NBA Finals there is a very limited number of people qualified to make calls on a world stage.  I am positive there are less than a dozen golf officials in the world ready to make the big call.  There are going to be some good people making bad calls.  But then again, this is a dream scenario for the USGA because they will be the story.
