Which trees at Oak Hill would you take down first?
« on: August 17, 2003, 05:10:56 PM »
As at Winged Foot, trees at Oak Hill are here to stay. While some would like to see ~10,000 trees come down, nothing suggests that there is any remote hope of that ever occuring.

However, suppose the right ears were reached and some trees could be selectively felled here and there at Oak Hill. Where would you start?

For instance, there seems to be a nice diagonal off the 1st tee that is ruined by the trees down the left - out they come. ln general, any tree that is between the fairway and the stream that zigzags through the course should come out. There is a willow that hovers over the stream down the right of the 7th that should bite it.  The 9th hole has wonderfully topo, which would be better highlighted if many of the trees down the right and inside the dogleg came down. A thinning down the 10th would also highlight the character filled nature of that fairway. The 14th should be a horizon green and any tree within twenty yards of the edge of that fairway should come out, again thus highlighting the rolling nature of the property.

Where else? Try to be hole specific with your response.

Cheers,

Brad Klein

To be as specific as possible, I'd start with the green one.

The oddity and irony on many golf courses these days is if the superfluous trees were removed not only would the golf course and the play of it be better off but so would the attractiveness and visiblility of the trees on the course that really are impressive!

Here's a start;

-the one on 12 that is falling down w/ a huge iron beam holding it up!

-All of the ones down the left hand side of 14.

-All those sperating 5 & 6. Opening up the views and giving the tee shot on 5 no close frame.

-Agree w/ the ones on the left of 1 & 10.

-18th tee especially on the right hand side.
Integrity in the moment of choice

left side of 12th fairway.  Shots over there can't see left side of green.

left side of 13, ~70 yards short of green.  This was the lay-up area, and several guys (two in one group, Weir's, I think)were blocked from simple pitches to the green.

I'd start by taking out every other one.  Then after that I would take out every other one.  Then after that I would take out every other one and continue the process till I felt Ross stopped rolling over in his grave.  I cringed when they kept referring to Oak Hill as a Donald Ross course  :(   It may have been at one time but it is not any more.
