Swinging Skirts Classic?
« on: April 25, 2014, 07:07:56 PM »
Don't get me wrong, I love the name... but are we really allowed to use that name?

And I'm also happy to get a look at Lake Merced Golf Course.

I'd love to have seen Lake Merced when Mackenzie's bunkers and greens were in play.  Photos I've seen were terrific.  Lake Merced has a lot of elevation changes, it's a hike comparable to Pasatiempo.

Lake Merced has hosted the USGA Boys, the USGA Girls and the Cal State Amateur. It has also regularly been one of the courses hosting the Sectional Qualifying for the US Open.

Bill, I was very surprised by the name. It has a derogatory ring to it. To my understanding calling someone a skirt is improper. The only person I have known to use the phrase did not use it as a compliment.

The name sounded odd to me, too, but it must not be derogatory in Taiwan, where the host sponsor - a "private non-profit dedicated to promoting women's golf" - is headquartered.  A Taiwanese non-profit sponsoring an LPGA event?  Interesting.  See http://espn.go.com/espnw/athletes-life/blog/post/12110/5-fast-facts for more.

Here's a better explanation of the name and its connotations in the US.

Bill, the threads moniker belies the nature of the thread.
I opened this in full expectation that swirling kilts were going to be on the agenda!

My wife didn't feel like the name of the event was derogatory, and she is on the forefront of being a woman.

It gets real good name recognition, that people easily remember.

Thanks, Andy. Another example of the knowledge of GCA on this site! Neat story and interesting background for the ladies event.

But there is no way the marketing people that assist the LPGA did not LOVE the obvious double-meaning.

Incredibly smart. It pays respect to the traditions of the game and also pokes a little fun at it too. Perfect balance.

Combined with Ping's work with the Wounded Warrior Project, perhaps golf is moving into the 21st century!

;) As it turns out my wife is also "on the forefront of being a woman" and had the same reaction to the event's name.

BTW, with the wind and cold, there were not a lot of skirts on evidence yesterday.

A shame Jimmy Demaret is no longer with us to host.
Or Frank Sinatra and the Nelson Riddle Orchestra to play the opening gala: "Come Fly with me, come fly, will fly away...."

The word in the local press is that the tournament will return to Lake Merced next year.
