Which county in the US has the best and most varied golf courses?

I am afraid Suffolk County, NY would probably win this with NGLA, Shinnicock, Bridge,  Sebonack, et al.  But it would not make for a fun discussion.  Plus it would be like cheering for the Yankees.  

Monteray area should also be discussed.  

But I am a DuPage County lad at heart.  Chicago Golf speaks for itself, Butler National is a stout modern course and the Medinah complex has hosted multiple majors (plus a new course coming on line this spring).  

So let's have at it.  

And is there a county that has more great courses per capita than Hooker County, NE?

John-That's Suffolk County New York. Jersey's on the other side of the Hudson. ;)

Some people might nominate Delaware County, PA.  Well, however, I think New Jersey County, PA is superior.  The number of excellent Filene's, Buergerking's, etc cannot be matched.

Unfortunately I'm not really clear where the county lines are drawn or even what county I live in, but how about Westchester County in NY?  There's a few decent tracks there...

Joe B is close with Delco as it's known around here but I would propose Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

Ross and Flynn live side by side. Varied topography exists throughout the county. Populated with good courses.

Nope, I actually can't think of a single one worth noting.  But for the land that covers Westchester County, there's a lot of world class golf

Westchester might be the biggest divergence between public and private anywhere. The public golf is pretty terrible.

While still probably the overall winner, Suffolk doesn't have many great public courses either, though. Montauk is really good, Timber Point was a Colt/Alison that really could use a restoration, Tallgrass is excellent (if not overpriced), but that's about it that I could think of that was worth the drive from the City. Correct me if I missed any.

I think Bergen County NJ and Delaware County PA are at least in the conversation for runner up positions.

Ah, my home county.  I agree with you, Tim.
Don't forget:

Rock Spring (Raynor & Banks, KBM)
and 1/2 of the 36 of Canoe Brook is in Essex County

And I'd add the public courses I grew up playing (though not sure what's left of original designs)

Byrne (Banks)
Hendricks Field (Banks)
Weequahic (George Low)
East Orange (actually in Short Hills) (Bendelow)

Hopefully Pat will chime in regarding all the great golf in Essex County.  He's probably still celebrating ND women's nice win against Baylor  :)

I think that's a nice lineup, but I'm not sure I would call those courses varied? 9/11 of them are effectively classic parkland golf courses.

Suffolk County has a relatively diverse landscape as well.  I'm with some of the others who've commented on the public golf too--if Westchester gets dinged for lack of public options, Suffolk should too, right?
