I have no problem at all with a bunker like that being used as a good miss.  Having a cowards way out by ignoring the pin and going at the bunker is a good strategic option to have. If you have a green that the average 20 handicapper would be unable to hold, then you need a plan B

How about a hole that demands 5 or 6 iron off the tee and regardless of what comes after.

North Berwick west does and the jury is still out for me on that hole. Is there an option to take any other club, really? It was foggy and the caddy assured me categorically not. Which I didn't like.

But the approach shot is so thrilling that it makes up for it in spades.

Maybe I didn't totally understand this thread, but I thought it was poking fun at modern architects, specifically those who build championship 7000 yard courses, not the modern minimalist architects.

I've only played two full rounds at North Berwick and have both laid up and had a dig at the first hole... Seeing as the second option left me with an 18" eagle putt, I'd probably follow that one again, wind permitting.

   The green used to have a fat portion to it, a place to bailout.  That is strategic IMHO.  Creeks/Rivers are also apart of strategic design too IMHO.

I've heard of people driving the green! It's a low percentage shot and usually first of the day straight into the prevailing wind.

(EDIT Just seen Ally's post  .  that means between them Ally and Bryan Izatt have an eclectic best  score of five under par on the combined first and last hole. No wonder people say the course is easy.  assuming of course you didn't whiff the putt? )

Best to treat it as practice shot and then a fun one. At least it's usually a mid iron (depending on wind strength) and then a short one rather than the other way round.

Yes, I saw someone drive it pin high (on the 18th) with a 4 wood...hooking way out over the beach. 

I have driven it pin high left.  The only problem with this sort of play is its very dangerous for those on 18

Sank the putt, Tony. And it was the first hole in the afternoon after I'd done the same thing on the last of the morning.
