I recommend Tremont Tavern on the corner of Tremont and Hixson Pike.  Great bar and best burgers in town....

It's always a little dicey this time of year, but hopefully it will hold off.  I'm really looking forward to meeting the group.

Weather looks promising. Maybe a few showers Saturday but nothing to stop a hardy group, and Sunday looks like a Chamber of Commerce day. I'm looking forward to some golf!

Joe, is there a plan for rain? Friday looks pretty wet. Will we play if the courses are open, and how early do we expect to know about closures?

Jason,

I don't anticipate the course being closed, but do expect some rain.  Lawrence and I plan on playing so long as the course is open.  I will send a group email tomorrow to confirm participants.  If for some reason we find we cannot play even after a wait, I guess we can start eating wings early!

I think I played 3 local invitationals and a club championship last year in it.  Rain gloves are money.

I like The George Cup.

Wade Whitehead already runs a tremendous event named the George Cup after the indelible Lester George.  It is usually in the Fall at Ballyhack.  I truly, truly recommend this event as it is top notch fun on an extremely fun golf course.

I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

I had to cut out pretty quickly after the last round to get home, but I wanted to thank Joe one more time for setting this up. It was great to see a few old friends and make a few new ones. I'm tired after walking 45 holes on mountains and a 5 hour drive home, so I'll wait until later to discuss the courses. But thanks to Joe for arranging the golf and the post-golf, Doug for all the work he's done to make Black Creek and Lookout Mountain what they are today and for telling us the tale, King Oehmig for talking with us and also for having the coolest name I've ever heard, Rob and Ari for an incredible round at a course they've put a ton of work into and for hooking us up with some of the coolest SWAG I've ever gotten, and everyone who had to dodge one of my shots or put up with me whining about my crappy game. It was a blast, and I really hope you won't be strangers if you're ever anywhere near the Cincinnati/Lexington/Louisville triangle.

I would like to send a big THANK YOU to JOE for putting together this outing. It was top notch. Doug for the speech at Lookout, that I could have listened to all day.
ROB COLLINS- holy cow- what a course - SV is one Hell of a course. I would have given you a standing ovation if I could have. I absolutely think you did a marvelous job and It was truly my pleasure to meet you. Thanks for showing it to us and letting us play it.
To all the guys I met, It was awesome to finally put a face to a name. Thurman- I dodged a few of your so called miss hits, but we had a great time. Feels like I have known you forever. My boy REES, had a blast - even the 9 hour drive home after. Getting in at 3am and here at work I sit.
LYN- my brother- it was great to play each round with you and you are now my brother in Greenville- cant wait to play again

Highlight moment- Watching Malcolm hit his iron shot on the par 3 16th  at Lookout to 10 feet above the hole, to then putt to 6 inches and watching the ball stop. As he walked to the ball- a giant gust of wind pushed the ball 10 ft way, and what does Malcolm do, but hit the 10 ft putt for par like it was a tap in ---truly the best par I saw all weekend.

Thanks to Joe for setting this all up!

The presentation about the history of Lookout was fascinating.  Really appreciate all the time that was spent on that.

Lookout is a super course, and I have to return when the weather is better.  It has been years since I have played in such cold, wind , and rain.  My focus was just not that there, the weather was so extreme, and toward the end I just wanted it to end.  I will say that these are the most subtle and challenging greens I have ever seen.  You could swear the ball will go right and it goes way left.   What looked downhill could be uphill.  I would love to be there on an uncrowded afternoon and just play around on those greens.

Black Creek was a wonderful layout, a bit of an easier walk than Lookout.  From the right tees, a very playable and fair course.  The template holes were fabulous.

Have to come back when the fairways are green  and enjoy these gems one more time.

It was a pleasure meeting some new GCA'ers, hope to see some of you again this year.

Seconded on all accounts.

Saturday's weather was brutal but that didn't slow our excitement to play such a great track. And I highly encourage everyone to get to Sequatchie Valley- it's certainly the best 9 hole course I've ever played and wish Rob the best of luck going forward. If prospective clients came out and saw what he did there they would be as blown away as we all were.

I'll be there Saturday and Sunday. I'm not surprised to see other guys who live within an hour or two of me RSVP'ing. The freezing rain has just started and at this rate it looks like Lookout Mountain might be the next course I see that isn't covered in ice...

Guys, I'm sorry. I should never have posted this. I jinxed everything. I take full responsibility for Saturday's weather.

Rob,

Thanks for the accolade for the 16th at Lookout!

And also, thanks, for not mentioning the multiple foozled shots that surrounded that one moment of brilliance.

That is why I love the game so much!

Me three.  Great job putting together the outing, Joe.  Doug's talk at Lookout was both funny and instructive regarding what's involved in selecting an architect to build/renovate a course and then giving him (or her) free rein.  As others have said, the weather made for tough going at times on Saturday, but kudos to Jason and Rees for providing the inspiration at the 14th tee to continue on during the worst of it.

Until next time...

Thanks to Joe for organizing a peach of a get-together.  I so enjoyed making new acquaintences Saturday.  Thanks for my playing partners for gutting it out and acknowledging that golf is an outdoor sport.

It was a treat to see Mark Stovall again - "he gets it" is an overused phrase but Mark's the genuine article.  I also enjoyed visiting with King Oehmig over lunch.  Those of you outside of Tennessee likely have no idea what a legend his father is - one of America's great amateurs and likely it's greatest senior amateur.

Doug Stein is simply delightful.   His account of the history of Fairyland and its golf course was rivoting.  Lunch was what this site is all about in sharp contrast to some of the recent threads here.

As I've often said, no club in America has been more hospitable to me than Lookout Mountain.

Joe,

Again, thank you!  Even though I could only make Saturday's round at Lookout, and my wife talked me into wearing shorts and a simple golf shirt after dressing appropriately on my first try, I had one of the most enjoyable days on a golf course in quite some time.  And, I shot one of the best 82's of my life given the conditions and my choice of wardrobe!  ???

Ari, Ben & Lawrence, thanks for being excellent playing partners and, in Ari's case, member-host.  Others that I met in my short stay, it was a pleasure.

Cheers,
Will

I could not agree more.  Mark is one of the best in a profession that is filled with incredibly dedicated and passionate people.

I am sorry I missed this event, for this and many other reasons...incredible golf courses (new and old), great camaraderie, experts and top enthusiasts sharing their knowledge...that is what it is all about.  I am glad everyone seemed to have such a wonderful time.

Hoping to make it back to Chattanooga ASAP.

I can attest that it was an outstanding get-together and I'd like to thank Michael Hendren (along with Frank and Eric) for turning what could have been a miserable day on Saturday into an experience that will likely generate tales of incredible shots and blustery weather well into the future.  Michael was a wonderful host on the course and had entertaining stories to tell all day - contrary to his assertion, it was his energy and enthusiasm that got us through to the 18th.

Like Michael, I don't think I have ever felt more welcome than I did by the staff at Lookout Mountain.  At every turn they went out of their way to make the entire group feel like the club was their own.

Overall the trip put together by Joe was fantastic and he should be applauded for his efforts in putting this weekend together.  I hope that he will do it again and I would encourage all GCA members to experience a get-together like the one we had in Chattanooga.

Thanks Joe!
