GCA Spring Outing - Chattanooga - Lookout Mountain/Raynor
« on: February 04, 2014, 06:57:57 PM »
Gentlemen,

I have talked with many people off-line about having a GCA outing this spring.  Lookout Mountain CC in Lookout Mountain, GA (outside of Chattanooga, TN) has been kind enough to extend an invitation to play their club on March 29th, 2014.  Lookout was Seth Raynor’s last design and is one of the most unique layouts in the Southeast.

Lookout Member, Mr. Doug Stein, has agreed to speak before our round about the history of the club, many of the design features of the course, and a little history on Mr. Raynor.  Incidentally, Mr. Stein assisted in the building of Black Creek Country club, a Brian Silva tribute to Seth Raynor a few miles away.  I have spoken to Mr. Stein and am really excited about his willingness to share with our group.

We are tentatively set for lunch followed by an afternoon round at Lookout.  Mr. Stein asked if we might also like to play Black Creek CC on Sunday, which I think would be a great addition.

For those that might like to take a day off from work and come a day early, I am checking the availability/willingness of Chattanooga CC (Ross) to host a smaller group on Friday afternoon.

A few things:

1. If you are interested, please email me as soon as possible as I have reserved space for (40).  My email address is jtsponcia at gmail dot com.  In your email, please specify what days you want to play.
2. Out of respect for the club, I am happy to give you the costs via email.
3. I just spoke to the Stone Fort Inn, a very nice Bed and Breakfast in downtown Chattanooga about rooms at reduced rates for our weekend...it seems they are willing to work with us, but they only have 9 rooms so these will probably go very quickly.  They have a full service restaurant on site + are in the heart of downtown Chattanooga.

Thanks and I hope to meet many of you soon.
Joe

I'd be interested, assuming I can get away for the weekend.

How far is the drive to Holston Hills? I'd like to play there if I come down for this event.

I'll be there, though as a Lookout member id be happy to give up my spot if you run out of room.   I also might be able to work out a preview round for a group at Battle Creek/Sequatchie Valley GC which is only 25 min or so away and will be IMO the class of the area when opened even though it's only 9 holes.

You are doing yourself a disservice if you don't visit Battle Creek, and even the course the Gil Hanse redesigned at Sewanee.

Chattanooga is mini mecca of golf, not to mention the city is really cool.

Brian,

Holston is only 1:30 away and is well worth the drive.

So far we have 5 people in.

As for Sequatchie/Battle Creek...I have not seen it in person but it isn't very far from Chattanooga and with it only being 9, should be easy to fit in.  Are they private?

Battle Creek/Sequatchie isn't open yet but with any luck I should be able to arrange a group of GCAers for a preview round.   Again I think I could get architect Rob Collins to meet us at the property, give a talk about the project and play with us.

I am very interested as well.  Email sent.

For those not familiar, Lookout Mountain is incredibly fun and in a beautiful setting.  Superintendent Mark Stovall does a great job keeping the course firm and fast. The club is laid back, and counts several gca guys as members.

Don't miss out on an opportunity to play here.
New for '24: Monifieth x2, Montrose x2, Panmure, Carnoustie x3, Scotscraig, Kingsbarns, Elie, Dumbarnie, Lundin, Belvedere, The Loop x2, Forest Dunes, Arcadia Bluffs x2, Kapalua Plantation, Windsong Farm, Minikahda...

I have to warn everyone that Joe seems to be a very nice Gentleman.  This couldn't be further from the truth.  With that being said count me in for all three days.  It's hard to miss out on an opportunity to meet new guys and see old faces.

I'll be there Saturday and Sunday. I'm not surprised to see other guys who live within an hour or two of me RSVP'ing. The freezing rain has just started and at this rate it looks like Lookout Mountain might be the next course I see that isn't covered in ice...

We are up to 13 committed, 3 tentative.  I really appreciate the response and questions that are coming through.

One other quick note...I have had a few people ask me about bringing guests.  At this time, due to the limited availability, I would ask that only contributing members to the forum attend.

Frank,

Have you down. That makes 18 with 3 tentative.  We are capping this at 40 people, Chattanooga CC (if we can get a few spots) will be first come.  I anticipate 12-16 spots at on Friday only.

I am really excited about the GCA trip to Chattanooga! I think you all will enjoy the city and the golf.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about lodging/dining, etc.  I just emailed Joe and hope that there is still room available for the Lookout round...I had a fun round there with Ari last weekend...what a fun course.

Also, I'd be pleased to tour/play Sequatchie/Battle Creek with any interested members of the party.

I look forward to seeing you all in March.

Rob, after seeing your photos of Battle Creek a few months ago, there's no chance I would miss it. Count me in for that, preferably Sunday afternoon but I would also come in early on Saturday if that works best.

Gentlemen,

We are sitting at 19 right now.  I spoke to Chattanooga CC today, and with one more 'hurdle' to clear, we will probably get 12 people on between 2-3pm on Friday.  They are a very busy club, so I feel thankful and fortunate that they would host us.  I should know something for certain by Monday.  Reminder:  Sat/Sunday is capped at 40 people.  Must be a GCA contributor (please).  IF you need more information, jtsponcia at g mail dot com.

Gentlemen,

Chattanooga GCC has been confirmed for Friday, 3 tee times:  2:30, 2:40, 2:50.  I'll email the first 12 on my list this evening.  Also, the Bed and Breakfast I was hoping to get did not come back with favorable rates.  I did speak with the Read house
(http://www.sheratonreadhouse.com/), and they have extended $99 per night for us.  Very nice, classic property.  Amazing steak house inside.  If you want to stay at this property, contact Tyler Fordice for "Sponcia Golf Group".  Even a Holiday INN express on the weekends is in the $80 range normally.  It is approximately 12-14 mins to Lookout, 5-7 mins from Chattanooga GCC.
