Chuck,

Yes and no. :)

When I was growing up in Chicago, we played to temporary pins anytime it was above ~38* and there wasn't any snow on the ground.

Considering the winter we're having in Minnesota this year, if it were 28* I would be outside right now in shorts and a t-shirt swinging a club!

If you were where I think you were, then no. I would play there in any conditions, under any threat.

I don't play winter golf. I even try to avoid winter golf in Florida. I like the time away from the game.

I came into school today around 9 AM and passed by our local "pick up your own" driving range to find a one solitary fellow hitting balls.  And it was 25° out!

I've played a few times this winter in less than 30* weather.   It is a ton of fun.  The frozen ground turns a normal parkland course into a firm and fast links course.  I've hit a couple shots this winter along the ground I could never have considered hitting in the spring, summer or fall.

The first time I went to play in weather like this it was 22* and I went into the pro shop and asked if I could go play and the pro gave me a really funny look and said "um uh, I don't know.   Never had anyone ask me that before in weather like this".  Then proceeded to frantically call the super to get me permission.   It was a ton of fun.   I'm just waiting for the snow to melt so I can play more winter golf.

I don't mind playing in the cold and wind. But what really turns me off to winter golf is playing in the mud. Here in Columbus, our weather is just warm enough that the ground rarely freezes solid. We have lots of freeze and thaw cycles, which means the courses are very sloppy during the winter. I'm also not a big fan of temporary pins. So I tend to avoid winter golf. There is a covered range down the street from my home, so I'll head there to hit balls on decent days.

I love Winter golf and will play if it is above 32. Living in New England you need an assist from Mother Nature and I will only play if the pins are in the greens. Atlantic City is the go to spot if nothing is open but Shennecossett in Groton stays open all Winter weather permitting. As Ari mentioned the firm and fast conditions are a lot of fun and take some getting used to.

Ari

wait till you get back, snowing like mad out.  prob 4 inches on the ground and accumulating!  Used to play over winter break if the temp was 30 deg or more on temp greens.  The club drunk at our club would tell my friend and I that we failed the ''idiot test''.  Those were the days.

Many of the muni's keep their greens open year round!  They are prob faster in the winter time

The telling sign that winter golf, or any firm and fast golf, is more enjoyable, are the audible yucks and chuckles emanating from the average joe golfer.

Just yesterday, I hit a shot that had in flight commentary ranging from "good shot" to "your so frickin lucky." That type of divergence can only come from the unpredictable bounce and roll associated with core principles.

South Shore CC in Hingham, MA stays open all year, and so does Kelly Greens in Nahant (exec length).  Also many of the Cape Cod courses are open for winter play, but you are often playing from short distance and temp tees...although they generally keep the greens open.

Most private courses north of Boston where I am close fully.  Tedesco keeps a winter course going with pins in the fairways...9 holes plays about 2500 yards.
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

Gets dicey if you leave it short in the middle of the lake, especially in Indiana. Playing your next gives a whole new meaning of not grounding your club ;)

Hi, My name is Jason and I play winter golf, well winter golf in Northeast Kansas anyway.  Would have loved to play yesterday (course remained closed with ice/snow on the greens) when the temp got above 40° because today is well below freezing with 2-4” of snow on the way.

Attached below is from December 15th, frozen fairways and tee boxes which translated in lots of fun.  It’s one of the few times we get to see lots of run on zoysia fairways.

Had to tee up just outside the tee box in the grass, ground was too frozen to use a conventional tee.

I really meant pinch it off the lake; not bump it
