Your personal "best of" in 2013
« on: December 31, 2013, 04:20:20 PM »
Anything as long as it's golf related.

Mine:

Best Course Played: Pine Valley, runner up - Wolf Point.
Best Round: 72 at Sand Hills, 2nd Best a couple 73's.
Best Shot: Eagle 2 on #16 at Noordwijkse during the Club Championships into a (very) high wind. 5 iron, one bounce then dunk.
Best Golf Trip: USA trip.
Best Road Trip: Denver to Ballyneal, Sand Hills and Dismal with Eric in the largest land vehicle I've ever seen next to a tank.
Best Almost a Great Shot: Hitting the pin on #17 at Noordwijkse and ricocheting off and rolling back down the hole 15 meters below.
Best Solid Week of Golf: BUDA - 288 holes in one consecutive go...wow!
Best Beer on a Golf Course: Wolf Point
Best Mexican after a great day of golf: Edna, Texas.
Best Most Disappointing Course: Woodhall Spa
Best Worst Round of the Year: Noordwijkse, 83 in windforce 7-8 and hard rain.
Best Post Round Steak: Cooked right here in NL by my girlfriend :-)
Best Surprise whiskey flask by a guest that turned a round around: Michael Goldstein at Noordwjikse, too funny we both started play better.
Best You're Nothing Like I Thought You'd Be moment: Meeting JK at Dismal.
Best Hottest Round of Golf ever: Pine Valley on July 3rd, 100 degrees and 100% humidy. (if it wasn't that exactly it sure was in my mind)
Best "Living the Dream" Moment: Mid round rainout sipping brewski's in CGC with Barry.
Best "Holy Shit, Never Seen One of those Before Moment": Chasing an armadillo at Wolf Point with the boys.
Best Worst Ever Reason to have to cancel on a round of golf: Canceling the morning I was supposed to play Plainfield with Redanman because my father had a massive aneurism burst that cost him his life. Also worst moment of 2013!
Best New Par 3 played: #17 at Sand Hills. Second, #2 at CGC (I think it was 2 at least, or maybe 3)
Best New Par 4 played: Hells Half Acre although this was a tough one. # 16 or 17 at Wolf Point as well, driveable par 4. (maybe I have the number wrong.)
Best Par on a Par 3 that could of been a par 4: #8 at Oakmont at 296 yds. Pulled drive with my 3 wood (probably should of been driver) into the ditch with knee high fescue. Chunked out into the bunker then holed the bunker shot to win the hole.
Best "I played this hole bad over and over again". Short reachable par 5 at Brancaster where you hit to an island fairway. No matter which club I hit I hit it into the hazard.
Best "press of the year" while not really getting the hang of it: Jeff Warne a very good teacher, on 18 at Brancaster.
Best "most painful loss of the year while actually having won the match": Arble and I won our match against Sheehy and partner somehow Sheehy beat me on the 18th hole or maybe 17th after I repeatedly found his lost balls at Skegness.
Best "Worst golf hotel of the year - with no heat in the room" - Skegness.
Best "Worst bar I've ever been to in my life that was jam packed" - Skegness.

...and finally!

Best "most fun pissing off my girlfriend on GCA" - damn, this post.

 Happy New Year Tree House!

Best Course Played: Crystal Downs
Best Round: 74
Best Round (score) with GCAers: 80 at Hyde Park with Brian Finn and Charlie Dusic. There were a lot of ugly rounds with GCA members this year.
Best GCA Trooper: Nigel Islam, for grinding out 18 holes of rain during a round at my home course on July 4.
Best Equipment Change: Moving from Trues to Nike TWs.
Best Hat: The powder blue one I picked up at Idle Hour.
Best Shot: On the 7th hole at my club, I hit a cut 6 iron from 180 to 2". Runner-up was my next swing, a 9 iron from 155 on the 8th tee that lipped out of the hole and rolled to 3 feet
Best Golf Trip: Michigan
Best Beer After a Day of Golf: Bell's Amber Ale in the River Camp at Kingsley
Best Dinner after a great day of golf: Pizza at North Peak Brewing in Traverse City after Crystal Downs and Arcadia
Best Surprise Course: Metairie CC
Best Guilty Pleasure: The Irish at Whistling Straits
Best Round as a Single: Rustic Canyon
Best Awkward Animal Moment: Dogs mating behind the boundary fence as we hit our second shots to the 5th hole at my home course
Best New Par 3 played: 17 at Whistling Straits
Best New Par 4 played: 14 at Blackwolf Run Meadow-Valleys
Best New Par 5 played: 8 at Crystal Downs
Best "I played this hole bad over and over again". 17 at Kingsley. In five rounds I never hit the damn fairway to catch the ski slope on the other side of the ridge
Best shot under pressure: 18* hybrid from 235, hooked 60 yards around a tree to 3' while dormie 2 on the 17th hole in my club championship. Lagged that short eagle putt for a tap-in birdie to stay alive.
Best Place Visited on a Golf Trip: The Kingsley River Camp. I honestly thought I might have climbed through a wormhole and gone to my future vacation home. Halfcourt basketball, fishing stream, firepit, and canoes and kayaks everywhere with a rustic cabin that smells like firewood? Yep, it's just the way I would've left it.
Best GCA Insult: When I told my wife I was going to Michigan to play the Midwest Mashie, she said "Oh, is this with your Internet friends? Your Match.com Golf social group? Is your Internet Boyfriend going?"
"There will always be haters. That’s just the way it is. Hating dudes marry hating women and have hating ass kids." - Evan Turner

Some of y'all have never been called out in bold green font and it really shows.

Best GCA Insult: When I told my wife I was going to Michigan to play the Midwest Mashie, she said "Oh, is this with your Internet friends? Your Match.com Golf social group? Is your Internet Boyfriend going?"

My wife says the same damn thing each time I traveled to meet GCA guys this year--Cincy, Pete Dye GC and Kingsley. My wife also questioned whether I had to perform any special "services" in exchange for invites to certain courses.  Apparently it's not uncommon because Brian Finn's wife told my wife that she says the same things to him all the time.

Best Course Played: The Golf Club (edging out Canton Brookside)
Best New Course Played:  Canterbury (just edging out Kingsley)
Best Round: 71
Best Round (score) with GCAers: 74 at Kingsley with Brian Finn and Buck Wolter.
Best GCA Trooper: Jonathan Becker, for joining me and Matt Elliott for 18 holes of rain and cold during a round at my home course in late October when NO ONE else even thought about driving into the parking lot.
Best GCA player played with: Becker, Bill McKinley, Matt Schmidt
Most Friendly GCAer: Too many to mention
Best Equipment Change: Switching to AP2 irons (also moving from Trues to Ecco Bioms)
Best Hat: The simple white hat I found in the Canterbury pro shop.
Best Shirt: Peter Millar summer comfort polo I found in the pro shop at Scioto.
Best Shot: The near back-to-back aces I almost made on #9 at Kingsley--hit it to a foot each time. Runner-up is the hole out eagle I had on #2 at my home course--3rd shot from 155 after pitching out from the trees.
Best Golf Trip: Kingsley for the Midwest Mashie
Best Lunch during Golf:  Taco bar at Kingsley between rounds
Best Dinner after a great day of golf: Dinner at Kingsley after 40+ holes
Best Chair in a Clubhouse:  Leather chairs next to fireplace in The Golf Club lockeroom.
Best New Par 3 played: 5 at Kingsley
Best New Par 4 played: 4 at Canterbury
Best New Par 5 played: 1 at Kingsley
Best Old Par 3 played: 7 at Canton Brookside
Best Old Par 4 played: 5 at The Golf Club
Best Old Par 5 played: 18 at Canton Brookside
Best "I played this hole bad but loved it": 16 at Canterbury (think I made an 8-ish)
Best hole that I played despite awful score: Made birdie on my third ball on #5 at my home course in the club championship, after piping first two tee shots OB right.
Best shot under pressure: Cut 7 iron from 165 around a tree to 5 feet in an inter club match with my home course. Still missed the putt but won the hole.
Best course that I was going to play but couldn't: Kirtland because the course received 4+ inches of rain and flooded the day before.
Biggest disappointment: Not getting my new Mackenzie walker in time for Xmas (still waiting for the damn thing).

Best hidden gem I played: Salina CC in Kansas, an old Perry Maxwell

Best public course I played: Red Hawk in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Very nice condition, great views, fun to play

I was scheduled to play the Open Preview at Chambers Bay on Sunday. So I took time to practice Thursday and Friday. On Saturday I was schedule to play in a "6-6-6", 6 holes partner best ball, 6 holes scramble, 6 holes Chapman. I hate nonstandard formats, so seldom play them. Played with on of my regular partners, turned in our score having no idea how we did having next to no familiarity with typical scoring, mid week my partner calls to say we won the thing by a considerable amount. Since it was not flighted, it was the biggest prize I have ever won as we split $350 pro shot credit. I guess that was my personal best as my partner thanked me for carrying him to victory as I was 6 under net on my own ball the first six holes.

I guess I had another best as I birdied three in a row (gross) for the only time in my life in our club match play.

Mine was very simple - we opened Laval-sur-le-lac's (Blue Course) in the Spring of 2013
I've built lots of new courses, but it was nice to finally build a new course that represented my own ideals for a change.

At the opening the club made me an honorary member.
That was my highlight, since it was so unexpected.

Best Course Played: Palmetto, runner up - WeKoPa Saguaro
Best Rounds: 70 at Cave Creek GC, 71 at Biltmore Adobe, 72 at Apache Stronghold
Best Shot: Probably the 4 iron to the 14th at Palmetto. Not my club (I was playing rentals) so the beautifully lofted, soft-landing shot was a real surprise and treat. Also hit a really fun snap hook 6-iron around some trees, over a creek and to about 15 feet while playing The Frog later that week. That one was nice.
Best Golf Trip: Augusta GA
Most Disappointing Course: Wildfire Faldo. I love the design, but it’s always just sopping wet and it drives me crazy
Worst Round of the Year: 84, in a stiff breeze at the brand new Camelback Ambiente. Also had an 83, that should have been much worse given how I was hitting it, but I kept it together with magic for most of the front none, at Gallery North. And I shot 83 at makai in Kauai, but actually played pretty well with the exception of a few disasters, and it was one of my most enjoyable rounds of the year
Best New Par 3 played: #7 at Palmetto
Best New Par 4 played: #6 Apache Stronghold
“Best” dogleg par 3: Hmm, there were two at Gainey Ranch. #8 featured a giant tree that demanded a draw … with a pond right. There was a similar tree issue on a back nine par 3, but at least you could gal out right without being wet
