Richard, I'm curious if you've played Greywalls.

I have yet to venture to the UP. I will soon as Greywalls is on my list!
Best Played So Far This Season:
Crystal Downs CC (MI), The Bridge (NY), Canterbury GC (OH), Lakota Links (CO), Montauk Downs (NY), Sedge Valley (WI)

Belvedere is the hidden gem in Michigan IMO.  Arcadia is offensive- expensive mediocre golf with great water views, what a novel concept (yawn).  The real question is when it's all said and done which will top the list-  the Mike Devries designed Greywalls or the Mike Devries restored U of M?

P.S.  Note to self-  see Pilgrim's Run

Much looking forward to many hours in the car next summer to play Greywalls  :)

Belvedere is the true gem of northern MI golf.  Others that go under the radar, in my opinion, The Mines and Sundance at A-Ga-Ming.

The last time (last having multiple meanings) I played Treetops, it was a parking lot, triple digit fees and in absolutely terrible condition.  I would've rather have gone to work

Wow Forest Dunes as the 10th best Public golf course in the state, incredible.  Its better than any course in my home state of Louisiana public or private, by a long margin.  No wonder I'm looking for a vacation home up there.

Matt, check out properties on Elk Lake or Torch Lake. You'll be within 90 minutes of all the following courses:

Crystal Downs
The Kingsley Club
Forest Dunes
Locenheath
Treetops
all other Gaylord courses
Shanty Creek resort
Black Lake

And countless others.

I curse the fact that I can't spend every week of the summer in northern Michigan on a daily basis.

Think I will get in on this;

1. Greywalls - Just a special place to play, very fun.

2. Arcadia

3. Eagle Eye - Very 'manufactured', yet with so many unique hole how can you resist?

4. Red Hawk - A forested course that I still loved.

5. Sweetgrass - Talk about a surprise, this course was intended to be just an 'also played' while traveling to Greywalls. And it will get better with age, I think.

Since I have only played 9 courses in Michigan, I am certain I left out a lot. Wish it had been more.

BTW, those putting in Crystal Downs etc didn't read the 'public' in the thread title, perhaps?

Doug
Where is everybody? Where is Tommy N? Where is John K? Where is Jay F? What has happened here? Has my absence caused this chaos? I'm sorry. All my rowdy friends have settled down ......... somewhere else!

I think the mention of CD was only in reference to proximity to a potential real estate area not necessarily in reference to the public course thread

Rich,

Been trying to drag you up there for years!  :)  You say when, we'll make it happen!

PS, I'll have some pics for you...

It's just such a shame that the season in Michigan is so short.  How long is the season in the UP?  About 2 months?

I was in Marquette the third week of September, and our weather was warm on Friday, a little chilly on Saturday and Sunday, but it was back up to 75 the week after we left.

I can say Harbor Shores is better than ANY golf club in Louisiana.

I've played Arcadia, Forest Dunes, Harbor Shores, what else public Hampshire, Lake Michigan Hills- Probably all could compete with TPC of Louisiana.
I'll be in the southwestern tip of the state, but I'm looking forward to overnight trips around that area of the midwest.

I would play the Western Am qualifier there.  My father in law knows the Sunday morning group and we would play when I went up there.

 8)  Matt,

Have you played The Bluffs at St Francisville lately?
Inverness (Toledo, OH) cathedral clock inscription: "God measures men by what they are. Not what they in wealth possess.  That vibrant message chimes afar.
The voice of Inverness"

Would you guys recommend making the drive from Milwaukee to Greywalls?  The photos on here have me reconsidering where I want to play during my annual summer trip to Wisconsin.

I haven't been to Greywalls yet  :-X.  Had a plane ticket this fall and got "delta-ed"

Of those I have seen:

1.  Arcadia Bluffs
2.  Belvedere
3.  Pilgrim's Run
4.  Forest Dunes
5.  The Mines
6.  Treetops Smith
7.  Treetops Fazio

I think I will stop there.  Don't really love Black Lake or Bay Harbor so I hesitate to put them up on a "best" list   8).

Rees,
I used to be a "national member" at Greywalls and would make the trip from Madison to Marquette 3 or 4 times a year in the summer to play 4 rounds over 3 days.  Its a scenic drive, once you get to the UP, and its very easy to play 18 the day you drive up, 36 on Saturday, and 18 on Sunday before returning to Milwaukee/Madison.  I recommend it highly.  Its an amazing course in a beautiful setting.
