The testosterone bunker
« on: October 12, 2013, 03:07:25 PM »
Played this hole the other day with a friend and we are both experienced and half decent. The hole, 380 yards with a classic redan green. I looked at it and thought aim at the bunkers on the right and smash it. I carried the first bunker at about 250 and the ball dutifully kicked left of the second right hand bunker (the left bunker is an aiming bunker out of range) into the middle of the fairway leaving me with about 60 yards over the left side bunker (actually a severe hollow but same difference) I was left with a tricky shot and had to aim right of the pin because taking the hollow on was just too risky from that short distance. My partner took the same line and pushed it leaving himself with a potential lost ball situation. We both made pars and walked off happy. I said to him we both should have played safe off the tee but didn't even give it a thought. I should point out that we are both familiar with the hole.

My question is; is the architect very clever in fooling with us to have a smash with the driver or are we both testosterone fueled idiots. I mean, a hydrid would have left us with 130 in and the fairway is massive at that point. (My suspicion is the latter but please discuss)  ??? ??? ???

Two testosterone fueled idiots who missed the obvious signals that a fade was needed from the tee if using a driver.  ;)

That would have brought the first bunker even more into play and you still would have left an awkward length in. Think the archy's gotten to you Jim and you haven't even played the hole. ;D

I'm just basing my remark on your description of the left side bunker as an unreachable aiming point. It would seem that a solid fade played off of it would put you right in the catbird's seat, that's if the photo was taken from the tee you had used.
Would a wedge from 60 yards be a problem from the center/right center of the fairway?

Play it 10 times conservatively and compare the average score with the last 10 times you played there.

No you've got a point. Right side would allow you to attack the pin. I just like the idea of that testosterone bunker that makes you want to carry it with no discernible benefit. Could be a great mind trick that the designers could use and wonder if it is common. Still think a hybrid is the play in hindsight. Should point out that there was a 10 mph wind following.

 8)  "..fueled idiots"?  Hmmmm.   Did you ever meet a sucker pin you didn't like?

IF answer is No, continue on and have fun laddies!
