Is the beach at Machrihanish still in play?  It certainly used to be.  The beach on the LHS of 11 to 13 at Elie is in play, though it would have to be a spectacularly bad shot to hit it.

Mark

Re Machrihanish - I played off the beach the last time I was there, so I certainly hope it's still in play.

I suppose its feasable to hit the beach at Lossiemouth although I never saw it done. If it was, I think I'm right in saying its still in play.

Greetings, Simon.  You may well be correct, but that didn't stop me from playing a sweet chip from the beach on the par 3 9th.  I saw no white stakes, and having come from a delightful time at North Berwick, and a bogey-saving third shot from the beach on no. 2 there, I was more focused on the recovery than the rules.  I played it three weeks ago.  Conditions were perfect, and perfectly extreme, with a small gale blowing for fun.  No complaints.

So how many times have you been on that beach?

I would have played the hole better but was startled by a major league iguana on the cart path!

Fun course and a neat resort with a friendly staff.  I hope Jorge and Susannah are well.

I think I can recall watching TV coverage of Brett Ogle, big straw hat and all. playing from the beach at Pebble. This would have been quite a few years ago, back in the days when B.O. used the long putter and before he took up commentating.
All the best

#17 Cabo del Sol - Ocean

Good story here too. During the first round of recently completed college tournament a young man from Cal State Northridge hit it on the beach. It was high tide so the surf was moving the ball in and out as he approached, he waited until the surf brought it in one more time as he prepared to hit the shot and he then got it up and down for par... BUT HE GROUNDED HIS CLUB and the beach was defined as hazard on the rules sheet. Bummer.

Not as common as the other where the beach gets action on a daily basis but shots hit long will end up on the beach in a recoverable position.

I believe I have made par from the beaches on 17 and 18 at Cabo del Sol but that could be rose colored memory.  I know I have played from both of them.

Phillipe - Clarke shanked an iron off the tee.

The pebble beach at RCP is in play.

The sandy beach left of 16 CPC has dozens of perfectly smooth golf balls littering it.

That was a lovely hole. I hear they have covered it with properties now. Pity.

I saw Rihc make a 4 from the beach at North Berwick!

I don't think he made a par from here later in the round, I could be wrong.

Nuzzer

I did in fact get up and down from that second shot lie in the gunge short and left of the Pit hole.  If I had only holed my 8 foot putt for par after being plugged in one of the right side bunkers on THE Redan I would have won the North Berwick Trifecta.......

PS--I finally found out a month or so ago that the logoed "birdie ball" thing you sent me several years ago was in fact a teaching aid and not a napkin ring!

Getting back on topic.....  the beach is in play at 9, 10 and 11 at Dornoch.  Also, 17 and 18 at Pebble are also in play, if the tide is out.  Somewhere on YouTube there should be the iconic film of The King (Arnie, not Elvis--Palmer, not Schwatzeneger...) playing his 2nd shot to the 17th in an early 60s Crosby.

Possibly, Thomas, but my first rugby Captain, Wilson Whineray, might disagree with you, if he were still alive.... :(

Was it not WW's countrymen from the Land of the Long White Cloud who anointed him such? Excellent AB's vrs Boks game last weekend. Heineken Cup tonight and over the weekend as well. Autumn internationals not that far away. Programme about Lions series in Aus just commencing on Sky. Oval ball time. Splendid.
