Holes where you can play from the beach
« on: October 09, 2013, 08:34:04 AM »
I think that's the second tee above.  One of my fondest memories of North Berwick was playing a six iron off wet sand onto the green the first visit there.  The caddy stood on the top of the bank and gave me a perfect line!

At Crail that tee shot is out of bounds, but the beach is in play at North Berwick!   If the tide is out....

The 2nd at North Berwick is a great example.... Here is another from Ljunghusen in Sweden... First photo is Thomas Beckmenn from Rainbird's 2nd shot when we played in April... 2nd photo shows how easy it is to end up where he did...

Off the top of my head, Kingsbarns has some spots you can play from the beach. Number 12 and number 15 spring to mind, although both are quite rocky, so you'd be lucky to catch a spot that you could play. Royal Cinque Ports also has various spots where the beach wall comes into play, especially when it's windy. More than once I have had a go at the 6th green at Deal and my partner and I (playing foursomes) have been searching amongst the pebbles for our ball. It's a bit less fun playing from pebbles than it is from sand. Tends not to go over too well when clubs get damaged as a result.

Is the beach at Machrihanish still in play?  It certainly used to be.  The beach on the LHS of 11 to 13 at Elie is in play, though it would have to be a spectacularly bad shot to hit it.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

At Cabo del Sol- on number 17 and 18, one can definitely hit from the beach if the ball ends up down there. The sand is very soft though, so that makes it rather difficult to make good contact. I imagine that sand at North Berwick is compacted pretty well so you can get a solid strike on the ball.

Holes that the beach are genuinely in play at North Berwick.

1,2,3,13,14.  There is not a day that goes by that someone wont play off the beach on these holes.

11,12.  I've seen people play off the beach by hooking one way left of the green when going for a back pin; its rare though.  12 is a little more frequent when people hit it left on their second shot.

Really?  I understood that the beach, at least to the left of the green, was OOB.

Some of these below might be yellow or red staked hazards. Some might even be classified as OB so therefore not applicable.

The 14th at Cruden Bay is one example of such as hole that comes straight to mind. I've seen it played from the beach a few times, once all the way from the waterline when the tide was right out, which is a pretty long way.

Some other examples would be the 1st at Machrihanish, the 1st at Royal Jersey, the 9th at Dornoch, the 1st at Royal Aberdeen, the 3rd, 4th & 5th at Golspie, the 9th at Brora, the 11th at Tain, even the 11th at TOC. There must be a few holes at Deal/RCP that this could apply to. I've even heard a story about a hole at Tralee, don't know it's number, where some folk allegedly play on to the beach deliberately, but I've not been there so can't confirm if this is correct/possible or not. And as I said above, some of the holes mentioned above might have the beach area classified as OB so therefore not applicable.

All the best.

The 10th at the Creek on Long Island. I remember our friend John "Tiger" Bernhardt playing from there during a fund raiser for Mike Sweeney's son Dusty's school.

Not at all, Counsellor.  I was there when Lou Duran made a great 4 off the beach and then went birdie, doublle bogey to finish two under (or something of that ilk)

Interesting.  My ball ended up perched on the last inch of grass before the drop and I was led to believe by my caddie that, had it ended up on the beach it would not have been in play.  Probably didn't fancy the climb down...

I saw Rihc make a 4 from the beach at North Berwick!

I don't think he made a par from here later in the round, I could be wrong.

Thinking of Bob, Rihc, Bill, George, Neil, Dr. Childs, & Tiger.

The 17th hole at Ocean Club at Paradise Island.
A very short 4 par that doglegs left along the beach, where you hit on a direct line over the beach...
...with sunbathers on the beach!

Must be different safety rules in the Bahamas  :o

There is (or was) a small beach at the 5th at Teeth of the Dog that was in play.  You had to dodge incoming waves though.

Just played from the beach this past Spring. 4th hole at Nairn. Thought I hit a great shot until the jet stream took control. Now, I really wish I took a picture!

Kilspindie.

JCowden,

I'm not 100% on this but I've played there enough to know that the beach is definitely OOB behind the first and right of the second.  I'm pretty sure its OOB on all the holes to to be honest.  Certainly is on the par 3 8th, and the cool short par 4 4th.

I played 6 rounds there in 4 days earlier this summer and it was in fantastic condition.

Not only is it not out of bounds, it's not even considered a hazard.  Play hard!  The only time I played Cypress Point I was on it and made a nice four.  It is a long way up!

I have played from the beach on 18 at Waterville.

The rocks directly behind Rihc (from hole #13) is where 19 of us spread the ashes of my best friend.  Thanks for sharing Mike Nuzzo, brings back some wonderful memories
