There was a fetish for this type of hole in northern Michigan for many years, after RTJ built the 6th hole at Treetops, which plays almost 100 feet downhill as you look over the tops of trees in the forest beyond.  Rick Smith's par-3 course at Treetops has a couple of holes which are even more severe than Jones' version.

I've played all of those.... the Fazio course there had one as well. I remember all of them pretty clearly.

You could say it certainly seems to be the "thing" at Treetops.... I guess since it's pretty much the reason for the name "Treetops", they had to run the concept into the ground. It does make the par-three course great fun, though.

I made my first hole-in-one up there, so I can't complain about the place too much.

Kingussie in the Scottish Highlands has a neat one with a good drop across the river. Number 15 if memory serves me correctly which is somewhere around 90 to 100 yards.

There's a tiny one on the 9 hole 'Cups' course at The Dunes - the altitude difference between tee and green is comparable to the length of the hole.

The 9th at Lake Chabot in Oakland, CA is a great drop shot. At least a 100 ft drop at 125 yds. By my definition a drop shot has to fall at least 50 ft to qualify. Another great little known one is the 13th at La Contenta in the foothills east of Sacramento, CA. 75FT drop at 165 yds over a pond and sandtrap to a peanut shaped green.
The 6th at Torrey Pines North may be prettiest of them all.

Isn't there a famous one at Cullen, in NE Scotland? The 7th maybe? (Not really sure as haven't been there. Excellent soup fish though, "Cullen Skink").

I would agree #7 at Pebble is the most famous.

Same way as a "Biarritz" might be nothing like the original... The Redan at Yale would play better if on the level but it is a cracking hole as is...

I'm not often a fan of severe drop-shot par-3's because although they provide a bit of excitement, I think they are sometimes routed in to a course as an easy way to get downhill and they can blow all the good work in a routing in craftily getting up that hill in the first place... In other words, you can end up with courses of 12 or 13 uphill holes and only 5 or 6 downhill ones...

An example is the 7th hole at Pt Ruddy's Glashedy course in Ballyliffen. In general, I think this course is routed very well, taking you up to high points and back down again once on each nine. However, the 7th blows it all in one go... He does it much better on the back nine with 14 (a less severe drop shot) followed by 15...

I was certainly a bit loose calling holes like #13 Yale drop shot. But the tremendous change in elevation adds significant value to this hole. Calling it drop shot, would not be a proper classification. Same applies to 8 at bethpage.

Not sure if the 12th at The Country Club has enough elevation change to qualify as a drop shot, but the ball sure hangs in the air for a long time. Great hole with a green the size of a pool table.

Walked by this hole during the US Amateur, it looked to me like the green surface has been pushed out all the way to the edge of the green pad... Is that something that happened during the recent Gil Hanse work?

There are, of course a million drop shot par 3s throughout New England. The recently re-opened Shaker Hills has  3 out of 4 drop shot par 3s. Every other course I can think of has at least one.

The 7th hole at Stone Eagle is 218 yards from the back tees, and about 150 feet downhill.  It is the 11th most famous drop shot in all of golf.  The tee box also offers a very nice view of the Coachella Valley.

My thought too. 17 would fit better although I guess I always thought of a drop shot par 3 being more on the shortish side for whatever reason.
