I couldn't risk a dollar that soon after paying tuition, let alone two.  I will be coming after them soon, however.

I thought Midland Hills would be the easiest course to find, given it is ten minutes from my house.  Unfortunately, I took a wrong turn, but apparently was not the first person to do so:

Today's match involved my partner Rose Kelly and me against Dan Kelly and Shane Wright at Midland Hills Country Club - a very nice Raynor design that has been much improved over the last ten years due to tree removal and improved conditioning.  Shane Wright admired many of the remaining trees on the course by tugging his tee shots left.  Here is one instance where I could actually get him in a photograph:

Dan Kelly proved to be a miserable host by playing the first five holes one under par.  How one can play so well with this swing is a mystery:

I was about to start whining when Dan began to get into the spirit of things by blowing his second shot out of bounds on six.  I relied on my partner who looks more fundamentally sound to help us win the 6th, 7th and 8th to bring the match even.

Being the polite competitor I am, I asked Dan on the 11th whether he would make me replay my chip for par if I holed it before he attempted his lengthy birdie putt.  Dan proved as good as his word and did not make me replay my chip in for par.  He further showed true grit by three putting and handing the hole to the good team as we went one up.

Something went awry thereafter.  Everyone bogeyed the Biarritz 12th, Dan made a fine par to take the 13th, Shane birdied the 450 yard Alps/Punchbowl 14th and Rose and I made a complete mess of the 15th to go two down with 3 to play.

The 16th is an interesting par 3.  It looks like a Redan except there is a big hump on the left side that creates a counter slope.  I would call it a Pringles Redan.  I consider it the finest Redan I have played as I holed for a 2 to bring our squad within one.  Rose and I then made pars on the par 5 17th to square the match.

The 18th at Midland Hills is a pleasant par four of about 380 yards.  Dan and Shane decided to play the hole through the trees in the right rough.  Rose and I tried the fairway.  Shane hit a miserable iron shot left that he claimed was due to mud on his ball.  Dan chipped out and then hit a fine pitch to 8 feet.  Rose left her approach short.  I hit a beautiful punch shot into the wind that landed pin high and bounded over the green.  The match came down to Dan and me.  Dan left his putt short and left.  Showing my intelligence, I hit almost the same putt Dan just hit.  The match ended in a draw.

A great time was had by all on a pleasant evening.  Midland Hills is worth a visit if in the area:

My sharpie did get use and I am the proud owner of my own dollar bill with the signature of the participants.  I will post it when I find my phone.

We played a format I have become fond of this year - four ball, with the high ball breaking any halves.  It is a fun format because you almost never halve a hole and face a number of putts in the round where if you make it you win the hole but if you miss it you lose the hole.  The high ball decides nearly as many holes as the low ball so everyone stays interested throughout the day - even if it is a rough one.

Round 2 was at my club - Windsong Farm.  I played Jon Bishop for big states and had a clutch bogey, bogey, double finish and took him for $2.  I also was entered in a blind draw best ball event and was paired with a guy named "Groovy."

Photos of the course in this thread from last fall http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,53879.0.html

After we finished the course closed for the Gopher Invitational.  Here are a couple of pictures of guys teeing off on 17 and my effort at a more artistic picture of a guy putting on 18.

Jon and I took on a friend and Chad Hartman at Interlachen on Sunday.

Photo Tour:  http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,34900.0.html

I had not played Interlachen in a few years.  It seems as if half the trees have been removed, greatly improving the course.

We had a fantastic high ball low ball match, with Jon and me rallying over the back nine in the gathering darkness to cover a beating we received on the front side.

It has been the tour of draws so far.  Fortunately Cory Lewis is next.

Midland Hills - Doak Questions:

1.  I think it's fair to make some comparisons to the architect's other courses, as long as you say WHY the Redan at Chicago is better or worse than another.  (Holes-in-one do not count.)

My other Raynor experiences are Somerset and Minnesota Valley.  I think this one ranks up with the others, although Somerset could be the best with a true restoration.

2.  Everyone should include the hole they like the least and why.

The Biarritz at Midland Hills is interesting but ultimately disappoints.  The swale is very severe making run up shots almost a non-option, the green is at an angle to the tee and the whole thing slopes pretty severely once on the correct level.

3.  Everyone should say which hole they think is the most underrated and why.  (A vote on the best hole is much less interesting.)

Number one is a terrific short opener.  It is a simple layup and a pitch to a sloping green with a mild tier in the back.  It is an innocuous hole but fits the land well and feels right.

4.  Everyone should feel free to discuss what they think has been changed for the worse and why;

I need to plead N/A on this one.  I played the course many years ago when it was tree choked.  I cannot think of anything that has gotten worse.

I see your points, but mildly disagree. I have hit the green with a couple of runups from the tee (knockdown drivers), and numerous runups from just short of the swale. I have seen many high shots hit to hole-high -- though perhaps none of those high shots to way-up-front hole locations.

What you can do is run a low shot through the swale; what you cannot do is hit a high shot that you expect to go through the swale. I like that about the hole.

As a matter of fact, I love all four of Midland Hills' par-3s.

The hole I like least (and I don't dislike it; that was an important consideration for me in the decision to join: that I didn't really dread playing any hole on the course): No. 18. It's one of the few places on the course where a not-terrible tee shot can easily lead to the requirement for a little punch-out to the fairway (a shot I don't much enjoy, particularly on the final hole). And the green complex is one of the least interesting on the course.

3.  Everyone should say which hole they think is the most underrated and why.  (A vote on the best hole is much less interesting.)

Agree re: No. 1. Much harder than it looks; it's hard to get the approach in the right spot, unless the hole is just shy of the ridges. Back right and back left are hard to find, even from elsewhere on the green.

Underrated holes: Nos. 9 and 15. Two great greens, with many, many interesting (and demanding) hole locations.

----------------------

Of course, as you know, I think the whole golf course is vastly underrated among the golfers of the Twin Cities, and essentially unrated by golfers who aren't from here -- because there are so many other better-known courses here in town that visitors rarely find their way to Midland Hills (perhaps particularly if they are relying on The Confidential Guide to guide their choices).

Windsong Farm - Doak Questions:

1.  I think it's fair to make some comparisons to the architect's other courses, as long as you say WHY the Redan at Chicago is better or worse than another.  (Holes-in-one do not count.)

My other experiences with Lehman/Fought courses include Troy Burne, The Gallery- South,  Sand Hollow and (apparently) Rush Creek.  The courses tend to be heavily bunkered with gigantic greens, wide fairways and deep, severe bunkers.  I think Windsong stacks up with these other courses although no location can match Sand Hollow.

2.  Everyone should include the hole they like the least and why.

The 18th is over the top.  You hit an uncomfortable uphill tee shot to a fairway pinched by a stream on the right and bunkers, deep rough and long grass left.  Your second is heavily pinched by water on the right and wetland on the left.  The third is a club uphill to a green with water on the right and a deep bunker left with the green sloping away.  Long hitters can reach this green in two but it is a slog for the rest of us.   The water feature on the right has a gigantic artificial waterfall and is out of place with the rest of the course.  More importantly, the hole is just awkward and a bit like a 3 dimensional Florida hole.

3.  Everyone should say which hole they think is the most underrated and why.  (A vote on the best hole is much less interesting.)

The second is a cool hole even though the fairway bunker is on the wrong side.  The hole is about 410 yards and can be a driver half wedge for me down wind and a driver/ 3 wood into a heavy wind.  The green slopes front to back and wraps around a side slope with short grass feeding away from the green if one hits it right.  I have not seen another one like it and it makes for a number of interesting approach shots.  Downwind it is a dicey touch shot.  Into the wind, a shot must be solidly struck and correctly judged to hit the green.  The fairway bunker is on the left side when the best angle to the green is on the right.  I would put the bunker on the right and force the player to make a decision off the tee.  Now the bunker simply punishes a pull hook.

4.  Everyone should feel free to discuss what they think has been changed for the worse and why;

The changes to the course have been relatively mild so far and generally for the better.  There used to be a tree compounding the challenge on 18.  A tree on the left side of 5 is a loss because it protected the preferred angle into the green although there is enough slope on that side of the fairway that one can be messed up on that side anyway.
