Course designer sentenced to 10 years for tax evasion
« on: August 01, 2003, 05:08:29 PM »
Anyone know much about Ted McAnlis or any of his courses? Guess he'll be taking a little time off from the business. The following article appears in Golfweek.

ASSOCIATED PRESS
West Palm Beach, Fla.

Golf course designer Ted McAnlis was sentenced to 10 years in prison for tax evasion, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Aug. 1.

McAnlis, who argued at trial that Americans are not required to pay income tax, will also serve three years' probation after prison. He was sentenced Thursday in federal court.

He was convicted in April on eight counts of tax evasion after investigators said he evaded over $1.3 million in federal taxes, penalties and interest by concealing his income and assets from the IRS. McAnlis had not filed an income tax return since 1977, prosecutors said.

The Palm Beach Gardens resident designed many Florida country club courses and helped redesign the Blue Monster at Miami's Doral Golf Resort, site of an annual PGA Tour event.

That's a pretty tragic story but it doesn't top the one Forrest posted a couple of weeks ago about the former golf course consultant who was robbing banks!! 8)
What does it matter if the poor player can putt all the way from tee to green, provided that he has to zigzag so frequently that he takes six or seven putts to reach it?     --Alistair Mackenzie--

I thought they only pulled this charge out on people who actually committed other crimes that they couldn't be nailed for? (A la Capone).

He represented himself in court. Sort of like getting into a sand trap you designed and not being able to get out.
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Ridgewood Lakes near Davenport is the only McAnlis I've seen.  I don't care for it, but the site wasn't good either.  R. Kelly was arrested when he was hanging out there.

Sigh.....I'll bet not many golf designers will be paying taxes this year.....

Not because we are libertarians like Mr. McAnalis, but because we won't show any income to tax! :P  And it won't be because of any hi-falutin tax shelter, either! ::) :'(

A guy I work with has not paid federal or state income tax for the last 15 years. He claims to have studied the issue thoroughly and says, in brief, that all we are required to do by law is file a return, or statement of income, not actually be taxed on it-that paying tax on income is voluntary by law. He includes in his return a large volume of papers that he says proves this and serves as his evidence for the IRS. I have seen what he does with my own eyes and I know that he has never had any trouble from the IRS - perhaps he has either slipped through the cracks or they have not caught up with him yet. Who knows? I am not sure that I would ever have the balls to try it.

Bill K.

There are currently, some several dozen anti-tax believers serving time in Federal prisons for this same belief. Your friend is playing Russian roulette.

Turn in your colleague the thief.

Collect the bounty.

Build a nice golf course with it.

Let him play it when he's paroled.

Sound like the "Zero Return" story my neighbor (who does NOT follow it) told me about the other day.  Irwin Schiff is the chief proponent and his core belief is that the IRS doesn't have the power to tax us.  (Maybe not, but they do it anyway!)

All you have to do is renounce your SS# and about 10 other equally objectionable things.  Let me know how it works for you.  I'll be in line first to pay taxes.

To Bill K:

While your friend may not be voluntarily paying taxes, he is subject to withholding if he gets a salary, it's a very good bet that he is paying backup witholding on all of his other income. Plus tac liens on property, penalties, interest, etc.

Basically these people are the alien abductees of the financial world--they believe, but it just ain't true.

My guess is that his architecture may not always have a grip on reality either.
