Josh, are the top 2 greens nine and eighteen? That looks very similar to nine and eighteen at French Lick.

Nigel, correct.  Top is 9, middle is 18.

It's similar in concept to French Lick, with the shared complex, fringe cut.  But at French Lick  the holes come in from opposite directions; 9th from the west and 18th from the east.

I really like the shared 9th and 18th complex concept.  Increases the "social-ness" of the course in my opinion.

Perhaps this is a Ross thing ... I'll add the 8th, 10th and 16th at Aronimink ... now if only I had the skill set to post pictures you could all see what I'm talking about!

slightly OT, but have seen a couple pix here of two greens of holes running parallel.  Another Phila. area course, Springhaven, has this... #2 and #8... both par-5's.  #6 green isn't too far away.

And, like Dan B., if only I had the skill set to post pictures you could all see what I'm talking about!

I too would bet Joe could do that ... hint, hint ...

someone should show the greens committee at Springhave these other pics from Kennett Square, Broadmoor, and idle Hour... they could really do something interesting with this twin green complex if they wanted.

Here's an aerial of Prestbury (Colt ca 1924). The green on the right is the 1st (approached from bottom of picture), that in the middle is the 13th (approached from the top of the picture), while that on the left is the 17th (approached from the left).

Does this help with maintenance logistics? I'd assume it would cut mowing times down some if there was limited transit between greens. Or perhaps it was easier to construct greens that close together. There had to be a reason for Ross to do this more than a few times.

As Bob mentioned above, Ross would put those three greens on a single high point.  Great for drainage I'm sure.

I think Bob Crosby hit the nail on the head when he mentioned the "high ground".  So many of the instances I can think of are where greensites were placed on the high ground.  In the batch below the only not involving high ground is Peninsula.  A quick glance of our GoogleEarth Library reveals the majority are Ross courses.

Peninsula G & CC in San Mateo - Holes 5, 7 & 9 (Ross)



Lancaster C.C. - 15, 11 and 1  (Flynn)



Crestmont C.C. has four (relatively) close greens and four sets of tees.  The 7th, 11th, 1st and 17th. (Ross)



The Country Club of York - 1st, 7th and 10th (Ross)

In the case of Broadmoor, I think it just made sense to route the course back to the clubhouse multiple times.  I do know in "Golf Has Never Failed Me"  Ross mentions liking to bring the course back to the house at least twice and give the player options for smaller loops of play.  Surely bringing 3 greens together is part of that puzzle in many of these cases.

Howley Hall near Leeds has 4 greens (2nd, 10th, 15th & 18th) all within 50 yards of each other around 3 sides of the clubhouse as well as having the 1st, 6th & 9th all within 50 yards of each other to boot :)

The other neat feature of those Prestbury greens is that they are all on different levels, the 1st being the highest and the 17th the lowest.
