Of course we all love to look at photos of great courses (and probably not so great ones as well), especially when we aren’t privileged or positioned to play any of them.  For most of the great ones and many others there are lots to see.  And we can never under value the work of or thank enough folks like the great Joe Bausch in this regard.

But it seems that for some courses there are none to see.  I’m sure some clubs don’t want any out there, while for others there is not the demand so to speak so there are few if any available.  I suppose that many good but not great courses might fall into this latter class.

Some that come to mind that I am interested in: SFGC – I seem to recall a reference to posted photos and a request by the club that they be removed; Philadelphia Country Club – I’m originally from the area and very interested in seeing photos of this course; and Preston Trail in Dallas – maybe not a great course but highly rated in Texas, highly exclusive, and virtually no photos on line that I can find.

Any insight and discussion on this topic is most appreciated.

Well, when you take pictures of golf courses you sometimes take pics of people. For clubs that value privacy it's simpler to enforce a no pictures policy than a "no people pictures" policy.

Anyway, do you have any Vidauban pics?

When I was traveling as a student 30 years ago, there were three clubs that asked me to sign something promising I wouldn't let my pictures be used for commercial purposes -- San Francisco Golf Club, Seminole, and the Country Club of Detroit.  I don't recall seeing very many pictures of any of them online.

CC of Detroit had a good back story -- their policy was put into place one day when the Ford Company showed up to shoot a commercial in front of the clubhouse!

I went to see several courses in Scotland and in Canada this month of which I hadn't seen much in the way of pictures beforehand.  I deliberately didn't look online before I left, as I wanted to have the experience that I used to have, of discovering something good for myself.  It was a lot more fun that way.

I still think the push to have 500 pictures of your course online before it opens is misguided, but I don't know how to stop it.

Oviinbyrd, a pretty exclusive club in the Muskoka Region of Ontario, Canada - they were fine with me taking photos but politely asked that I keep them to myself and not post anything online.

Go to Google, click on images and type in the name of the course you want to see?   You'll see hundreds of photos of any golf course.

San Francisco GC has hundreds of photos and many have been placed on this web site. Same with Seminole.

Tom:  Golf courses that place 500 photos of the course online are trying to generate some PR.  Currently the NCGA has been sending out numerous photos of Jones renovation at Poppy Hills mainly over Facebook.  It's been fairly obvious they are trying to generate some excitement.

Tom,

Can you elaborate on your feelings about posting pictures prior to opening? Does location (remoteness) matter?

Tom,

Tim:

My feeling is that there should be some element of mystery in going to see a new course.  I understand the desire to publish SOME photographs in advance but certainly not of every hole.

Ten or twelve years ago it was still possible to control that message to a large extent.  When we were building Barnbougle, there were some early pictures of the back nine holes (which had been built and grassed first), but there were no photos of the 4th hole and the 7th hole printed before it opened or even for a while thereafter.  The reaction of people coming to the golf course and finding that the pictures they'd seen were not even the best holes, was worth its weight in gold.  They were so much more excited to rush home and tell their friends about it.

Nigel is right to cite Shadow Creek as another example of the same marketing phenomenon, and I can assure you that Steve Wynn was very selective in what he let out and what he saved.

Now, I fear, most new courses are disappointing.  For the new course at Dismal you've already seen multiple pictures of every hole ... many of them are not even good pictures, either, but you already have an expectation of every hole.  Therefore you are more likely to come away disappointed than surprised.

P.S. to Joel:  I know that some courses send out hundreds of photos, but for most of mine, there are hundreds of photos on this web site even though I have never posted one, and neither have most of my clients!

If it's any consolation, if I ever get to Dismal River, I am far more likely to be surprised by the quality of the course than disappointed.  The photos I have seen on here make the course look pretty average.

Preview photos only work IMO if there are limited photos of the boldest features (eg 5 tee, 17th tee, at Barnbougle) but it is the more subtle features and playability of a course that makes great courses great, not it's boldest features.   I find 200 photos of a course I have never seen very hard going, to the point of giving a negative impression of the course.

Shadow Creek?

They have their own web site, http://www.shadowcreek.com

Again, try Google images and you'll see thousands of photos.

I was told a few years ago that a rater visiting Spring Creek Ranch in Memphis had his camera confiscated and returned at day's end without the film or memory card.  Come to think of it I haven't seen a photo of this Nicklaus course and it draws little if any comment here.

Sounds like something SCR would like people to believe. There are municipal golf courses harder to access.
