start with a par 3 ?

I believe that one of the courses at Westchester had a par 3 first hole.

How about an uphill par 3 ?

I was thinking of Paramount and the "road" issue on the first hole.

Starting on the 2nd hole creates a disconnect of sorts.
Sand Hills might be a primary example of a first tee disconnected from the clubhouse.

What other clubs require a hike to get from the clubhouse to the first tee ?

Royal Lytham and St. Anne's starts with a par 3.  That's what screwed Woosnam in the Open Championship.  If he started on a non par 3 he would have noticed two drivers in his bag...

That is still the most unbelievable thing I've ever seen in pro sports. I remember Curtis Strange saying on the broadcast that he would have had to fire the caddie right then and there had it been him.

Addington has a pretty hefty uphill short hole opener.  Musselburgh's is uphill and better than Addy's.  Mind you, the doozie uphill par 3 opener has to be Church Stretton's. The white flag can just be made out over the left side of the gorse.  Everytime I have been there its been a driver out the gate.


The second too is a steeply uphill par 3. 


Not uphill, but the third has a seriously uphill climb for its par 3.   


AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Pacific Grove (CA) muni starts with two par-3's!

The great little 9-hole Traigh GC, on the western coast of Scotland, begins and ends with a par 3. The 1st hole is a blind, uphill shot to the top of the sand ridge that forms a spine across the course. Yarra Yarra in Melbourne starts with a par 3.
In addition to Sand Hills, the original Sutton Bay, Dismal River (White & Red courses) start a long way from the clubhouse.  Old Sandwich's first tee is across the reservoir and removed from the business around the clubhouse.

Pat,wouldn't a par 3 start be ideal for pace of play? Also,I have wondered if architects sometimes design a 10th hole par 3 to keep the nines from being switched

A couple courses we played in high school started with par 3s.  On one I had to hit 3-iron (and I was pretty long), as my first shot of the day, with no driving range or even a single warmup shot.  I never liked that hole!

Walton Heath (Old) starts with a par 3, and then you cross the road.   In the 1981 Ryder Cup they skipped the first and the long par 4 second played as No. 1.  I don't know how the composite course worked after that.

In Westchester's case, I believe the nines are switched, so that is actually #10.

When Victoria GC hosted the Aussie Open a few years back, they shortened the first hole to a par-3 (it's about 265 yards).

My hometown Janesville Country Club had a par-3 10th and I often had to start on it.... I didn't like it, because it was about a 6 or 7 iron and if you missed the green left or right, you had an impossible bunker shot.

Huntercombe starts with a rather nifty mid-iron par three, slightly vision impaired, to a sort of corrugated iron type green.

Southport & Ainsdale has a medium length par three opener.

Otway also has one (well with a par of 64, it's no big surprise). Grange - a Braid design - in Dublin unusually starts with two par threes.

La Canada Country Club in Southern California, just north of Pasadena starts with a par 3.  It's not necessarily a couse I'd recommend seeking out.

The best I can think of are Walton Heath, Addington, Lytham & Berkshire Blue (all mentioned)...

I know a few others but no point listing them because they aren't in the class of those above...

A whole bunch of Scottish courses that I've played in times gone by
(Callander, Carradale, Cathcart Castle, Cochrane Castle, Colville Park and Crow Wood - to name only those beginning with a "C")
start with a par three but only one course that I visited recently, Aberdour in Fife, begins with consecutive par threes,
both of which are excellent short holes.

Bingley St Ives is a short four for normal play - it might have been a par three for you guys when the Lawrence Batley was played there in the  80s, I guess :)
