3 types of golf courses

Some idol thoughts from driving to Iowa:

I see three general types of golf courses and their characteristics:

Public (old)
Modest maintenance
Incomplete cart path (some dirt)
Minimalist design
Grumpy pro
Very short green to tee walks
8 minute tee times
One tee, maybe two for each hole
Very tight golf holes, sometimes dangerous
Dirt

Public (new)
Tries too hard to be a resort
Wall to wall cart paths
Some over-design
Lots of new golf shoes
Long green to tee walks (better to sell carts)
8 minute tee times
5 sets of tees minimum
signs and rope

Private (old)
Short green to tee walks
Golf in its purest form (see the list on this web site)
No tee times
Caddies
Money
No pool
3 sets of tees max
No remodeling or change of golf course in 50 years
Few woman and kids
no ropes, no flowers

Private (new)
Pool, gym, banquet hall
Expensive metal in paring lot
Boring golf course (playable formula type)
5 sets of tee
Woman and kids
Clean
Cart paths with curbs, benches, ball washers, etc.

Resort (typical)
8 minute tee times
Wide cart paths with curbs
Bag tags
Very, very friendly
Very strange golf holes
Twenty five sets of tees on every hole
Ropes and flowers
Signs (stay out environmental contamination!)

Resort (new)
Golf focused
Mimics private (old)
12 Minute tee times

Doesn't it make you wonder, how, when and why the deviation from "private old" took place ?

Is Television the real culprit ?

good "idol" (sic) thoughts, but tough to pigeon hole everything in those categories....what about the grand old city clubs that had full facilities ie BCC and Olympic; what about private "resorts" a la Seminole; what about the tons of rpivate old with in between and what about the number of places that went from golf to tennis and swimming as additions--or went from golf to family?

Sorry, I meant "idle" although some (wife) consider me an idol. I forgot to mention “look at all the new houses” under public (new).

2.Those that focus on costs.
3.Those where vanity and attitude are everything.

I am in Coralville, Iowa one to two days a week.  We are adding 9 holes and revising the existing nine holes at the Brown Deer Golf Course for the town of Coralville.  I have a great associate/shaper in Mike Langkau doing the bunker work.  It is a 51/2 hour drive across Illinios to the job site from my house (about the same to fly).

If you are in the area feel free to stop by and see Mike or myself (when I am there).  They have a great pro in Sean McCarty.  He qualified and played in the US Open shot 76, 71. He hits it farther than Redanman.
