Top Ten - Hole Restorations

What 10 holes, from what golf courses would you like to see restored ?

My list would start with # 12 at GCGC and # 15 at Preakness Hills.  I'll fill in the other 8 later.

Plainfields #'s 13, 14 and 15 might be a consideration as well.

#1 at Pasatiempo...It would be such a cool par five from up on high without the big trees and driving range net.   I am such a first holer that start turns me off until the very birdiable 11 and 12th.

"very birdiable 11"

Obviously for you it is such!   ;D ;D

Re #1 Pasa, well... I too would like to hit that tee shot from up high once again, but I'd still call it a par 4 just for psychological purposes.  Put the fear of god in players right from the start, you know?

Pat,

Yale # 3 get rid of the cart path, move the green back to its original position, over by the pond, though it may have to be raised for drainage.

Yale 4 - restore the greenside bunker to its Raynor original

Yale 5 - restore the short hole green to its original height, and bunker depth

Yale 12 and 17 - I just received a newsletter about the upcoming Rulewich work. Rather than make Geoffrey crazy, let's hope they meet the goal of having it completed and done properly before next Spring's NCAA regionals at Yale.

The drainage issues at the 7th have been repaired, and seem to be much better than when Tommy was there.

Alpine (Aldecress)#2

Tillinghast devoted 2 chapters of his first book (The course beautiful) to it.  Chapters 10 and 25.

Unfortunately, we won't be able to restore the wrap around fairway and peninsula-esque green because of the location of our club house.  A true, true tragedy.  This would have been one of the top holes in the Met Area and a contender for higher status.  I am working on scanning an old pic of it for the site.

I'd really like to see the par 3 from Ojai (I think it is #7 right now) "re-restored" to the way it looks in G. Thomas' book.

Pat,

Holes 13,14 and 15 have been restored at Plainfield.  Mounding has replaced the left fairway bunker on 13 and the fairway has been expanded to the left to allow balls to run into the mounds.  The left greenside bunker on 14 has been also replaced by a mound complex.  The green has also been expanded and a chipping area added to the back of the green.

The 15th has seen the most dramatic change.  Again, mounds have been restored on the left side of the fairway.  In addition, a cross bunker complex has been restored to the center-right portion of the fairway.  This greatly enhances the risk-reward dynamics of the hole.  A good drive over the cross bunkers will leave a short iron into the green.  However, it is very difficult to advance a ball to the green that finds the fairway bunkers as they are quite penal.  Also, drives left of the cross-bunkers often run int the mounds and you are usually left with a difficult stance.

 Rolling Green---#7 and#12
It would be soooo easy to restore these two gems to their previous glory. All you really need to do is cut down some trees.
Many of these restorations require big bucks to rebuild bunkers or greens,or big regrassing projects to change fairway widths.
Someday we will open up these holes and the membership will say"Why did it take so long?"

18 at TOC, before they moved the green left and put in that "Valley of Sin" in the 19th century.

Since I just got the thrill to explore it with George Bahto, 12 Eden Waunatonomy.  Perhaps 10, ANGC, and original 6-7 now 15-16 there just to see how it was - as I'll never really get to play it... ::)  8 Riviera sounds good.
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

The 17th at Spring Brook CC. I have already mentioned here that the archie who was brought in to renovate our course turned the best par 4 on the course into an absolute abomination of a par 5. Such a tough test by the way, that at 57 years I hit drive and 6 iron from the back tees twice in the last week, 5 iron the other time.

Bob Farrell,

You should inform the readers that you do hit the ball a loooong way.  I still remember your drive at # 18 at Roxiticus a few years ago.

I'll be visiting Spring Brook tomorrow afternoon.

Spring Brook has the distinction of having three very good par 3's in a row.   #'s 9, 10 and 11.

Being new to this site and not knowing anyone I think it's best that I offer a hole to appease at least one member who apparently is world reknown.

#3 at Santa Teresa

BTW: I had my wedding reception on top of that hill :D

#2 and #17 at Plum Hollow
And I took full blame then, and retain such now.  My utter ignorance in not trumpeting a course I have never seen remains inexcusable.

Hope to see it happen someday,

How about 16 Cypress Point with the tee back up on the hill at 270-280 or so, just as Dr. MacK designed it.  Now THAT would be a world class "par" 3!

The original 5th hole at Philadelphia Country Club's Spring Mill Course, remnants of which are now part of the anticlimactic 18th.  The present tee box is original but the finish was at the present practice putting green.  What a hole!  I'll try to have Craig Disher help me post the Flynn drawing.  To restore this hole you'd have to tear down the clubhouse (the reason for the hole's demise).  Since they just put millions into renovating the clubhouse, there's no chance at all....but a boy can dream.
