Has anyone played the "new" Maidstone yet?
« on: May 25, 2013, 10:11:47 AM »
I was speaking to a member yesterday who hasn't seen the course yet this year but has heard that most of the membership loves the changes that were made though some wish it were kept alone.  Has anyone seen or played the "new" course after the changes made by Coore & Crenshaw?

Steve,

I can't imagine the membership making any substantive changes.

What changes did you hear they made ?

Pat,
I heard from a member that they did some pretty extensive bunker work. They added some that had grown over, and "fixed" some that were there. I think they also added some on 2 in an effort to help the drainage issues.

Was the work a result of the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy, or independent of that storm ?

It was not only Sandy related. They had the tee box on 15 to worry about, but they did bunkers all over the course.

Steve,

If you look at my thread "My first trip to the Hamptons"  Mark Saltzman has posted some of his pictures from Maidstone in 2011 along side mine from two weeks ago.  In my opinion the changes look magnificent.
2016 Highlights:  Streamsong Blue (3/17); Streamsong Red (3/17); Charles River Club (5/16); The Country Club - Brookline (5/17); Myopia Hunt Club (5/17); Fishers Island Club (5/18); Aronomink GC (10/16); Pine Valley GC (10/17); Somerset Hills CC (10/18)

I played this past May, 2013.  A wet Spring, so not firm and fast, but I appreciated the course very much.  I think the new work done to restore the bunkers, add new bunkers, and add eyebrow fescue was wonderful.

As for the itinerant golfer not understanding why it isn't ranked higher, well the restoration was completed after the rankings for 2013 came out.  I think it will jump quite a bit when the new rankings come out.  However, that all depends on people getting out to the Hamptons to see it.

As far as the course being short, maybe it is on the card, but being seaside, and windy, I found it played fine for a low handicap amateur.  As well, the main defense are the greens and greenside complexes.  The greens had great slope, speed and many rolled right into bunkers.  Something I also have seen at C&C's Bandon Trails, and I think is a fascinating way to defend the course.  Too greedy and a little spin will drag your ball right off the green.
