Hi,

In July (10-19) I will be in Oxford for my job. I'll probably be in the area a bit earlier and stay a bit longer,
as during the work related period, I might have little time to play, except for the afternoon of Sunday the 14th.

As I'll miss the BUDA in Holland  , I intend to treat myself to some rounds on courses in the area!
So far I have located Woburn at about an hours drive that I would like to play. But as there are a number
of known and lesser known courses in the area it is tough to choose and as such I would appreciate suggestions
and I would also welcome the opportunity to play with people in the area.

I would also add Frilford Heath, near Abingdon. 54 holes, best being the Red and Blue.

Frilford is the best golf in the immediate Oxford area - I have to disagree with Martin though, and say that I like the Red and the Green far better than the newer Blue. But none of them are really top class - it's pretty much the only sandy soil in an ocean of clay, but there isn't a vast amount of topographical interest.

In town, Southfield (or Oxford Golf Club as it's now known) is a lot of fun, despite some ordinary holes and a stupid pond that has recently been added on the eighteenth.

Huntercombe is certainly the closest really interesting golf, and the only must-play in the vicinity imo. It could stand some fairly aggressive tree clearing but the set of greens is unique.

About thirty minutes north of the city, Heythrop Park is a new design by architect Tom Mackenzie, in a historic park. I think it is really rather good, although the soil is lousy and the walk is long. Worth a play.

I live just west of Oxford. Happy to meet up for a game if I am around, though that period is just before and at the start of Open week, so it's likely I shall be in Scotland.

In addition to those already mentioned, I'd recommend Tadmarton Heath. Slightly olde-worldy traditional feel, plays longer than the card suggests, sandy free draining soil, small greens, gorse and heather and great fun.

I'd also suggest the The Green course at Frilford Heath. The Green course is underrated IMO, with the holes from the 5th to the 13th, where birch trees, gorse and heather abound, being particularly splendid. Nice (small) green complexes too.

Wherever you play though, hope you have a great time, take some photos and let us know where you played and what you thought of it (them).

Whatever you do, don't go out of your way to play The Oxfordshire (Rees Jones).

Some great ideas on here, but also Beau Desert is only about an hour away up the motorway and a full day shared with Whittington Heath would be a good price.

BD is a fair bit more than an hour from Oxford. It is ninety miles, and part of that involves getting round Birmingham, a notorious traffic blackspot. An hour and a half at the very least, two or more if the traffic is bad. You can be at Sunningdale in quite a bit less!

What Adam said.  Anyone getting from Oxford to Beau Desert in an hour has probably had the benefit of a helicopter.

Hi , i'm a member of Frilford and would recomennend all three courses. Nothing spectacular but solid golf. Huntercombe is excellent old world golf and Oxford G C , use to be called Southfield ,is a great Harry Colt course right in the centre of town. As earlier mentioned Tadmarton is good, about 30 mins from Oxford.
 I was once a greenkeeper at the Oxfordshire and it is always kept in good condition but very american in design.
A little bit further away you have Temple (good) ,Beaconsfield (good) , Stoke Park (overpriced) and Woburn (good).
If you are looking for a game at Frilford let me know and also allow plenty of time for your journeys as the traffic can be very bad.

I work next to Oxford GC and always enjoy playing there, the greens are some of the best in the area.
I could meet you after work one day (4pm ish) and might be able to persuade my old boss to sign us in.
