     The NCAA Division One Championship will be conducted at the Crabapple Course of the Capital City Club starting on May 28th and concluding with the final matches on June 2nd.

     Does anyone have any info on the course, thoughts pro and/or con on the course and how you think the college boys will do?

     Also, as an added note, I would like to welcome fellow GCA'er Chris Cupit , who will be joining the NCAA Rules Committee for this years Championship.
Chris, we have a great bunch of guys that I know you will enjoy working with. See you in a couple of weeks.

I played it 6 years ago or so on a very cold and rainy day in February. And I enjoyed every minute. A very BIG golf course. I wish that it was more highly regarded in Atlanta, as I thought it was better than Cuscowilla, which I played on the same trip.

 I liked the course quite a bit the one time I played it, but got hooted at here for praising a "sod farm."  I remember the par 3's as being particularly strong, especially the long one on the back side with the chocolate drop green.  Also the long, bunkerless par 4 toward the end of the front nine.  Seemed to me like a solid course and lots of fun.  For what it's worth I also preferred it to Cuscowilla.

I am not a big fan of Crabapple. Only played it 1x but was just blah to me. Cusco has more thrills. Feel like Crabapple was a missed opportunity. It is nice, the practice area and clubhouse are amazing and 2nd to none. I left not feeling thrilled for whatever reason.

I live nearby and I've played Crabapple several times; I have to say I've been unimpressed each time.

There is nothing wrong with the golf course.  It is, as several have mentioned, HUGE.  Gigantic piece of property, big fairways, big bunkers, big greens.  But it is, to use Kenny Baer's expression, blah.  Very few holes are memorable or compelling, and it is not a course that you would kill to play again.

Anthony Nysse, we'll have to agree to disagree on this one.  I don't think Crabapple is even remotely in the same league as Cuscowilla.  I think it could have been; it is that good of a piece of ground.  But it just isn't.

Thank you!  I am excited about helping out.  I am in Tallahassee right now at regionals getting ready for Atlanta.

Crabapple is a big, long course whose primary defense is the rough.  Without dense rough the kids will go low.  Hell, I shot 64 there (not nearly all the way back), and that was possible only because the course had little rough at the time.  I think one GT player shot 61 a few weeks ago actually.

It's been a cool spring and the Bermuda rough will not be scary.  But, the bent greens should be perfect--firm and fast!  Still it will take very difficult hole locations to keep scoring near par IMHO.

Kids are playing at Golden Eagle where I am and first day has -16 leading and -8 tied for the last spot!

I am volunteering for the NCAA's coming up and it should be a great event. Talked to Tourney chair yesterday and they are going to make it tough but fair. Rough will not be as severe as the Ping Preview this past fall due to weather. Greens will get quick and fairways will be cut tight and running fast. Fairways are in best shape I've seen them as they overseeded this winter for the first time.

Course is great set up for high level play, which was one of the goals of the club. There are some solid holes out there, with a few bland ones. #3-#6 are all solid, with #8 being one of the best on the course. Real strong par 4 with no bunkers.  12 offers some strategic options with 14, 15 and 16 all solid holes. 18 is a tough finisher.

Fazio had multiple routings draws but the county dictated the final choice due to some issues with # of times crossing a stream on the course. No idea what was going on behind the scenes on that one. There will probabaly be some changes in 2014 to the course. There is a great greenskeeper, Kyle Marshall, who is experimenting with different grasses to plant aound the course. It's a a beautiful piece of property that I think needs a little more character. It can get bland at times and there are to many bunkers. Some bunkers will be removed and the planting of the new brush  areas will give it a cool feel.  I think once they do some of that work, it will really start to grow into its own.

What were the scores when they held the AMEX there the first year it was open?  I think , if I recall correctly, that was the last tournament Ed Hoard officiated.  (not 100% on that but recall someone saying such)

Not sure of scores. Tiger won I think. Much different though. Fall event and Bermuda rough was very penal. I can't imagine rough will be nearly as difficult. Very pretty property. I haven't seen the course this year but if fairways are fast and rough is manageable, the only thing to keep scores up would be some very, very tough hole locations.

My point exactly! 

Course conditions dictate everything   I played a much shorter course (6700 vs 7300?) with no rough, receptive greens and no pressure of anational championship

There's golf and there's championship golf and Crabapple will be showing those you g men some fine championship golf in a few weeks. If it heats up and rains they may get a little rough after all. I'm sure they aren't mowing toughs right now

I appreciated your comments on the course, but I had to comment on a GCA "it's a small world" moment.....

Your Dad and I played a lot of golf together (and both of your folks and I socialized a good bit together) 30 or so years ago.  Your Dad and I did a "Home and Home" for the member-guests at Capital City and Cherokee for several years!  Please pass along greetings for me.

Enjoy your time working the tournament.....   I've found time spent working amateur tournaments very rewarding and have made lasting friendships doing so.  Good to see you participating here, hope you enjoy the Treehouse!

I agree with most sentiments here.  Crabapple is "blah" and can play very easy.  It is always in perfect shape because most CCC members do not drive out to play it over their in-town course.  It is fun to play because you can "check out" and usually score well.

Just my opinion, but those boys will tear that place up.
