#13.  Par 4.

Hole description from the HC's web page:

The par 4, 374-yard thirtheenth is a soft dog-leg right, spotted with bunkering all over the landscape. Hitting a driver can be a risk. The recommended play from the tee is a fairway metal, thus avoiding the crossing fairway bunkers on the left side that encroach the middle of the fairway. A mid to short iron will be left for the slightly uphill approach to a small and elusive target.

From long and right of the green (they had recently punched the green surrounds, hence the sandy look):

#14.  Par 3.

Hole description from the HC's web page:

The par 3, 182-yard fourteenth plays slightly longer than the yardage. Any club from a fairway metal to mid iron could be used. There are many twists and turns to this fifty-two yard deep green, so knowledge of the pin location is key. A deceptive hole from a distance standpoint, this hole has yet to yield a hole-in-one by our members!

#15.  Par 4.

Hole description from the HC's web page:

The par 4, 391- yard fifteenth is a true dog-leg left. Hitting a driver is a gamble, so the recommended play from the tee is a fairway metal. A long to mid iron will be left for an uphill approach that plays longer than the yardage. No bunkers surround this bowl shaped green but a sense of accomplishment can be gained when making par here.

#16.  Par 4.

Hole description from the HC's web page:

The par 4, 450-yard sixteenth is the last of the three long par 4`s. The most demanding tee shot on the back nine requires both length and accuracy. A well-positioned tee ball will leave you anywhere from a fairway metal to mid iron approach. Large bunkers, both left and right, will collect short shots. Par is a great score on this hole, which has a generous sized putting surface.

Tee view:

Tee view from Ran's review:

From right in the fw:

View from short of the diagonal mounding:

From just over the green:

#17.  Par 5.

Hole description from the HC's web page:

The par 5, 488-yard seventeenth is reachable in two with a solid tee ball. A fairway metal or long iron will be left for the approach. If laying up, be cautious of the fairway bunkers both left and right. This green is well bunkered and receptive to a low running shot. A great opportunity for a birdie.

Tee view:

Second shot view:

#18.  Par 4.

Hole description from the HC's web page:

The par 4, 402-yard eighteenth is a slight dog-leg right. A well-placed tee shot on this home hole will leave a mid to short iron second to a green that is fronted by a large depression. You have to be careful with the opening shot here - any shots that are not shaped with the dog-leg will run through the fairway and into the trees. The green site itself is not very deep and is guarded on the left and front right by formidable bunkering.

Tee view:

That was fun.

Joe,

Thank you for posting this tour.

In 'your' photos, as opposed to Rans, have the putting surfaces recently been treated in some way or that just seasonal dark colouring of the grass?

All the best.

That's just the normal seasonal coloring.  Which I happen to really enjoy as I can see the contours a bit better.

Thanks for the tour.  The course looks like one I would very much enjoy.  Nothing too crazy going on, could easily be mistaken for an English course if the vegetation were different.

Did you think some of the short fairway bunkers seemed out of place?

I think the one on 16 is pretty cool the way it hides the width of the fairway -- creates indecision in the mind -- though I would have preferred to have seen it on the right instead of the left (but what do I know!).

Thanks for the tour, Joe.

What a lovely course.

What are people's thoughts as to the best few holes on the back nine?

Thanks for the tour, Joe.

What a lovely course.

What are people's thoughts as to the best few holes on the back nine?

David, here are my few (coming from a short hitting mid/high teen handicap hacker....will ask my 16 year old, who is 50 yards longer off the tee and 10 strokes better of a player what he thinks):

#10 - Really like the turbo boost one can get by carrying the crest.  Need to carry it futher to the right to get the most benefit of the boost, but shot shape is important. If not playing a little of a draw, a shot down the right can run out over the crest into the fescue as the hole bends, so their is reward for taking ont he boost, but also risk if you don't execute the right shot.  Love the two tiered green with front tier higher than the back.  Running a ball in needs to be well calibrated and executed depending on what tier pin is on.

#11 - Has been talked about a lot around here.  Great little par 3.  Skyline green.  Not a wild green, but not many easy putts either, so just hitting the green isn't good enough.  Real good test of precise distance control with a short iron.  After the long #10, you think this is a breather because you are pulling out a wedge, but its no pushover.

After playing gradually uphill on #10, playing up to a skyline green at #11, walking down to #12 tee and then looking at the down and then up nature of the terrain on #12, I'm not sure how people still refer to HC as flat.  Think C&C did a great job of making use of the elevation change that existed on the property.

#14 - Love the at grade nature of this par 3 and with the size/depth of that green there is a lot of variety in pin positions/hole lengths which provides for much interest on multiple plays

#16 - Not putting it here as one of my favorites.  Usually get here and after playing the beasts of #10 and #12 and think to myself "great...another par 4 I'm likely going to play as a par 5..."

#17 - Visually, I just really, really like this hole.  As with the rest of the course, thoughtful bunkering and a hole where I really feel that I am tacking myself (or trying to at least) around.  I then always remind myself that this hole is only 20 or 30 yards longer than #16 and par is just a number.

#18 - I've heard some say that this is not a strong finishing hole, but I really like it.  You need to think about your drive, cant just hit away.  Love the false front and the need to be thoughtful on the approach.  A lot of slope and tilt on this green so different pin positions really change the nature of the hole.

I love the ones not mentioned above as well.  There is a nice pacing to the back.  Beasts at #10, #12, and #16, but then breathers (or so you think) sprinkled in between.

Love the whole course, I feel lucky that me and my family get to play there.  Good for my ego too, in that while I don't score any better there relative to my handicap, I do more often than not end the round with the same ball I started with!

Thanks for a brilliant tour, Joe.

What a great looking golf course, even (maybe especially) in these off-season shots. The empty tree canopy makes it look more spacious, which allows the features on the ground to command the eye more.

Is it open year-round?

I've played it in December and April, so I'm going to assume the course stays open year round, weather permitting.

Yes, course is open all year round as long as mother nature cooperates.

The photos above were from the shoulder season a few years ago.

Recently I had my first in-season play of Hidden Creek.  I think you'll enjoy the photo album I put together from my visit last week:

Please note that the 2015 U.S. Senior Amateur will be held at Hidden Creek quite soon (September 26 – October 1, 2015):

Would it or would it not make sense for the USGA to switch the nines for the Senior Am so play would finish with that great clubhouse, dotted with spectators, as a backdrop?

I played HC for the first time this week.  I came away as impressed as I expected to be.  There is some real artistry there: bunkering, green surrounds, great use of the very modest elevation changes.  On top of great strategic golf, the course is playable for all levels of golfer.

Nate, I think the setting for 9 is great but in match play 18 provides such a great opportunity for birdie that I'm not sure I would change it.

I was curious as to the differences in width from front to back. Does anyone know why the back, while certainly adequately wide, is tighter than the front.
