After the Walker Cup committee consults HM Patrick Mucci, it can gap the singles matches so that there is less of a chance of a bottleneck. With only 12 matches ongoing, it shouldn't be too difficult to add 1-2 more minutes' gap to each.

Out of curiosity, if we assume they will need to park 1,000 or so cars each day, how close will the parking lots be to the course? Within walking distance?

Parking will be on The Elks Lodge property next to Southampton Golf Club on Rt. 27, with shuttles running back & forth to National.

JKinney,

Thanks for the photos, there is something so incredibly special about National.

Here we are, over a century later, and the course still challenges, excites and entertains us.

So it does, Pat, indeed......... And on Friday evening, Sept.6th, the US and GB & I flags will be raised on the magnificent flagpole on the bluff above Peconic Bay in front of the assembled USGA and R & A committees, past and present, and The Walker Cup will have finally come home - 85 years later - to its inaugural venue. Old Tom Morris and his onetime pupil when at St. Andrews University, Charles Blair Macdonald, will surely be together smiling down as the flags are slowly raised. And Bobby Jones will be with them, recalling what he called the greatest round of golf he ever played - level par at 73 in a cold and misting north wind during the practice round. And so will be George Herbert Walker, USGA President in 1920 whose idea it was to create the competition at his home club and among whose direct descendants are Bush 41 and 43. And finally, perhaps if one watches them long enough, the head busts of the twelve original Founders along the hallway going from the foyer to the great room might be seen to smile ever so slightly.

Bernard Darwin went to that first Walker Cup as a reporter and played in the matches because one of the British players fell Ill.  Won a match!

Bill - That Bernard Darwin substituted on the GB & I side and won a match is a fascinating detail I didn't know. Thank you. I will peruse the bound scrapbooks to find it. Also, I apologize for my lousy arithmetic....it was 91 years ago, the inaugural competition.

Will the Cuppers bludgeon the course as they did Chicago Golf Club a few years back?

Michael - Were the format stroke play, the scores would be low, yes. However, with match play all the risk/reward options will come into play. National should hold up beautifully on that basis.

JKinney,

That's a great time of year, but Mother Nature may influence play

Was at National today.  No changes that have not already been discussed.  There is no new tee box for 3 as was previously mentioned.
Bill and his crew did a nice job of raising the mound on 17th, makes coming in from the right side more of a blind shot than in the
past.
