Eponymous Major Metropolitan Golf
« on: March 20, 2013, 02:08:37 PM »
I've often thought that one could come up with an interesting golf book by playing the golf courses that bear the name of major metropolitan cities in the US.  This could also be a fun belt-notching tour for an ambitious traveler.  Here in my hometown, Chicago Golf Club is obviously a treasure, even if it is located about forty miles outside the city limits!  What are some of the other great courses named after a big American city?  I'm guessing that many aren't as well regarded as others in the same general area.  How many, like Chicago, aren't even located within the actual city?

Locally there is Minneapolis Golf Club ( http://www.minneapolisgolfclub.com/mgc/ ), located in St. Louis Park, MN. It's a pretty darn good Willie Park / Ross parkland design.

In St. Louis there is St. Louis CC...a CBM design that's great. I think it's technically in Clayton or Ladue, MO.

In MA there's Boston GC, which isn't anywhere near Boston.

And of course...there is San Fran GC.

Toronto GC is one of the best we have here in Canada. It's actually across the Etobicoke Creek, in Mississauga.

Royal Montreal, while perhaps not a great golf course certainly has a storied history as a club.

A hat rack with all of these logos would also be an impressive display.

What is the deal with New York Country Club?  Cleveland Country Club?  Seattle Golf Club?

Detroit Golf Club (Ross) is in Detroit and Country Club of Detroit (Colt/Alison) is in the very exclusive suburb of Grosse Pointe Farms.

Mike,

What are the relative merits/demerits of each?

I don't have access to either but there's plenty of info on this site. From what I've read, CC of D is on a very flat property with some ridges that add interest. It was recently renovated by Mr. Doak. Detroit Golf Club has two Ross courses. The North course is the championship layout. It's home to many of the wealthier Detroit businessmen while CC of D is old money and in a very exclusive part of an exclusive town.

I've often thought that one could come up with an interesting golf book by playing the golf courses that bear the name of major metropolitan cities in the US.

And whenever someone asks you why you decided to write such a book, you'd have a ready answer:

The London Club is a big money modern development with two courses, one by Nicklaus. Pretty ordinary IMO.

Terry - surely Chicago Golf Club is in the greater city area, it's not like you drive through farm land to get there.

Here in England many of our best courses have names but are known by the town name; Sandwich, Deal, Pulborough, Brancaster, Westwood Ho! etc.

Amazingly nobody has yet mentioned Philadelphia Country Club (Spring Mill), or Philadelphia Cricket Club.

I've been to Cincinnati Country Club, not so hot.

Tom Watson grew up at Kansas City C.C.

Country Club of Indianapolis.  Quite a few have had hands on it - Bendelow, Diddel, Hurzdan, Dye, Liddy - and probably others.    Dye loves to tell stories about how he accidentally killed off half the grass on the course as greens chairman.

Actually Howard Riefs mentioned each in an earlier post AND, not for nothing, he did so WITHOUT a link. The King of the Links can still hit a curveball, after all.
