GCAers in Houston?
« on: March 19, 2013, 01:47:25 PM »
I'll be in Houston in early May for the Carlton Woods Invitational. I'm flying in on Sunday morning, May 5th. Practice round on May 6th, then the tournament the 7th - 9th. Any GCAers up for dinner or a round of golf somehwere in Houston that Sunday afternoon?

Coincidently, I will be over from Scotland in Houston at that time.  It would be good to meet up if time allows it.  Have you played at CW before?  Nice setup.

2011 highlights- Royal Aberdeen, Loch Lomond, Moray Old, NGLA (always a pleasure), Muirfield Village, Saucon Valley, watching the new holes coming along at The Renaissance Club.

Yes, played the tournament last year on the Fazio course. Enjoyed it very much. Probably the best individual stroke play invitational I've ever played. Amazingly well-run; great course(s); wonderful hosts; great food; just an all-around amazing tournament.

I prefer the Fazio but I think most of the better players at the club usually plum for the Nicklaus.

Agreed.  Hospitality is fantastic.  How are you placed Monday and Tuesday nights? Are you staying in the Woodlands or closer to downtown Houston?

Fellas,

Normally I'd be happy to host but I'll unfortunately be out of town that weekend.

They're supposed to arrange housing for me, but I don't have details yet.

 8)  Ya'll can slum with us at The Woodlands CC if you need a real Player challenge.. beyond Sam's mental acuity tests..

Scorecard
Tee   Par   Length   Slope   Rating
Championship   72   7162 yd.   151   75.1
Blue   72   6753 yd.   141   72.9
White   72   6200 yd.   138   71.3

K2, how's Champions playing this year?

sounds like a critical mass may be developing

p.s. Sr Tour will be playing at our Tournament Course May 3-5, no admission charges.. come see the old guys play!

 8) guys, if they're setting you up with housing, it will probably be with a family inside the CW fence lines like they do for the HP Boys Champ.  .. either at the Nick or Fazio courses areas which are about 4 miles apart, inside The Woodlands.  There are also many places around TW's Mall & Market Square to lodge and forage for food..

You do know we keep the rich people locked up in their "Gated Community" (which the founder of TW conceptually detested) to keep them separated from the general populace in TW... though only protected by $10/hr rent-a-cop security..

Hope to meet up if it works out with K2 & Sam and any others that come out of the woodwork..

Cheers,
Steve

p.s.  I believe the CW gamers prefer the fazio to the main nick course, unless its rained (due to the sand bed under nick fairways)

David,
There have been some threads on Houston golf offerings, best to search and check them out, ..  Hundreds of courses in area - 40 miles in E, W, S, N direction from downtown, dozen or so publics (Memorial is #1) and dozen or so privates of greatest interest depending which side of town you're on may make the practical difference.    Also, March- May are the primo months so you're just in time to beat the heat....

I just moved to Houston  two weeks ago and it would be great to meet some GCAers here. So count me in for whatever. I am interested in seeing any courses in the area, so just let me know.

In one fell swoop, the average handicap of GCAers dropped significantly Houston ... and climbed precipitously in Chicago.

In a team event Houston would be tough, I'm about our worst player.

Are you related to the Toledo Molnar clan?

Steve,

I am not. I am from Cincinnati, so were prob not too distant relatives. There are not many Molnars in general, so were all probably not too far distant.
