I am planning a bachelor party in Knoxville for the Oct. 5 weekend.  The main plan is the UT/UGA football game, but since most of the guys play golf, we are planning a round or two as well.  I am looking for good options for public courses in the Knoxville area.  I have never been to the area, so any suggestion is helpful.  Thanks in advance.

I've played Stonehenge in Crossville, TN and it was fun.  I believe there are lots of choices in Crossville.  Also, you might try to call Holston Hills and see if you could arrange a time there.  That is a really good place to play.

If you guys don't mind taking carts then my #1 recommendation would be Arthur Hills' River Islands GC. www.riverislandsgolf.com  Good conditions with zoysia fairways and bent greens. It is most definitely a cart ball course but one that is high on the memorability scale. Check out the routing and you can see where it gets its name:




Another option on the west side of town is Willow Creek, www.willowcreekgolf.com The former home of the Knoxville Open. They've gotten a bit carried away with the ornamental plantings out there, but it's a fun golf course and the service there is CCFAD good.

Ruggles Ferry is a course I played a few times and liked a lot when I lived in Knoxville. It was a new course back then so it had its bare spots, but it is one I would love to get back to to see how it has matured. www.rugglesferrygolf.com A couple of brothers designed and built it on their own. As I understood, one was the grass man, the other the pro. If you do go, please let us know what you think.

I was startled to see it's an out and back course, but looks like there wasn't much choice.  Are the islands a lot lower than the mainland holes?

Hey brother Bill. Yes, some of those long green to tee treks are a dealbreaker for the walking golfer. But the bridges across the river are quite scenic and more than make up for any deficiencies in the routing. The islands are, as you'd expect, occupying the lower portion of the property, with the area up around 10 tee being the high point. It's a really cool property with the stone cliffs along the river and some good golf holes as well.

How is Holston Hills regarding non-members playing?  I'm hesitant only because it is a bachelor party and it could be upwards of 12-14 guys looking to play.  That seems like a tall request to me, but maybe the October date might help.
