I'd like to be in as well.

If nothing else I can set the lower control limit

I'm happy to stand to the side and serve as part of judge's panel...should you be lacking or if there's a crush of entries.

cheers

vk

Often there is a crush of wannabees, and then significantly fewer finishers and entries.

I don't know if that was the case last time. Anyway the list has been updated. It is growing ever-larger, but if more people are interested I encourage them to post and say so. Should there be a couple of dropouts then we may bring them in as alternates.

Edit: That's 16 and any further sign-ups will be alternates. Even in the group that has entered, if anyone is feeling like they may not have the time to finish consider volunteering to collaborate. Thanks.

Double edit: Oh gosh, 17 actually. Forgot a mystery contestant who expressed interest.  :-[

At the risk of disappointing Jim who is clearly encouraging the participation of patsies to ensure a higher finish, I will gladly give my spot to someone who hasn't had the pleasure of designing a flawed piece of crap before.

8) I'm game... just don't give me a topo where I can lay out 45 holes again!

Ditto!!!!!!!!

I, too, agree with some public input in the judging.

Put me on the waiting list please (as one has has not previously submitted a flawed piece of crap to GCA)
Never argue with an idiot. They will simply bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

Put me on the waiting list. Also interested in a collaboration if anyone is interested. (I'm in Europe, might be hard to make it work, but anyway)

For whoever provides the topo (and I suspect it might be Tom), could you give the participants a fairly tight site with a few constraints please... If for nothing else, it will be easier to judge than the unlimited options that come with a 1,000 acre site...

Alex,

I'd be interested in participating.

Thank you,
Mike

ps - A suggestion:  have the first phase of judging done entirely from the group to narrow it down to a manageable number of finalists (say 5-10).  Then have the Professional Judges pick the winner from there.  That would allow all to participate, while also reducing the time commitment of the judges.

Alex,
Could you set up some sort of online voting (maybe through Survey Monkey or something similar) to allow a few more participants?

Good idea Mike. The more the merrier. I hope that will be possible?

I think that's a great idea Mike! You guys aren't big enough boneheads that you'd flat out eliminate the best design, right? RIGHT?

I will continue to think this over, but I am in favor of a format that allows all who wish to a chance to participate.

If anyone wants to collaborate, please let me know.  It would probably be easier for a Chicagoan so we could meet over beers and you can tell me that I don't know what I'm doing.

Alex,

Why don't you let everybody in and crowdsource it down to 5-8 finalists. That would whittle it down to a manageable number for the judges to decide on.

Hopefully we can find a way to let in as many interested parties as possible. I found the first two contests to be extremely educational and rewarding.

That's what I'm thinking. I think 8-10, but I will talk to the judges (once they are finalized), and see what will work best.

Anybody have experience with surveymonkey? I think because there will be so many entries, and we can't presume that everyone voting on the survey will have time to look at everything in as much detail as the judges might, I think I will limit the public voting to only one page of material (the routing map). If people choose to provide supporting material in their entry (I'm thinking I might draw the green contours), then it will be too much for people to get through. Should their entry make it through to the judges, any supporting drawings will be available for judging.

I wouldn't mind getting a copy of the topo just to fiddle around with.  If you could include me on that list, I'd appreciate it.

I might also be interested in taking a crack at this for the first time if you open it up to everyone.  I really enjoyed looking through the efforts put forth in the last go-around.

Ok, everyone is in so far.

I think that even while limiting the public voting round to 1 page per contestant, we are still approaching capacity.

We are at 27 participants (which is awesome!), but I think going above 30 is a mistake. And I would expect the final number to fall from 30 to maybe 25 before voting starts. That's still a tremendous amount of material to go through, so that's my reasoning for imposing a hard cap. This thread has only been up 24 hrs, but I also think that since it's had a ton of traffic that most everyone has had their chance to sign up.

3 more spots open.

I do have a bit of experience with SurveyMonkey if you're needing any help with that.  I'm glad to offer any assistance should you need it.
