Announcing Armchair Architect Contest III! -prepare for launch
« on: February 05, 2013, 03:39:03 PM »
Hi all,

With Charlie Goerges permission a third iteration of a very fun GCA activity will be taking place. Many of you may remember the last go around. I recalled having so much fun that I decided to contact Charlie to see when it would/could happen again. Unfortunately he won't be able to run it this time, so he said I could give it a go. And with GCA in a winter-induced "cabin fever" of sorts, I thought now was the time to ramp up.

There are a few things needed before we get going, so I'm going to solicit the DG for any input they may have. I would like to hear your ideas and I can offer my own. For instance, I was thinking of making this a little throwback and keeping this low tech. A topographic map would be provided, you can print it and scan, work on it in MS Paint, draw on it and mail it to me to scan, draw accompanying hole/green maps (like a yardage book), whatever you like. While some may provide more support for their designs than others, I really would like to see all of them presented on equal footing (in 2D).

If you feel differently, please speak up!! I want to hear everyone's thoughts before going forward.

Things we need:

Judges
(I suppose I will go knocking door to door soon, but to the professionals on here, please PM me if you have any interest in volunteering your time and knowledge. It would be greatly appreciated and Charlie gave me a tough act to follow)

Topos (I have one, but no decision has been made, and to have a choice would likely provide a greater quality of contest in the end)

Participants
(Yeah, I doubt there'll be any trouble getting you folks, but comment if interested. I think <15 entries is necessary so that the judges don't have to spend too long looking through our efforts. Should a greater number wish to enter, I would encourage collaborative designs. You know, like Mackenzie and Jones  ;))[/s]

Sounds like a lot of fun. I would certainly be interested in doing something like this. Looking forward to more details. Thanks for putting this together Alex!

PS. This is a truly amateur contest right? Or are there qualifications necessary to enter?

Alex,
All in as a participant. Thanks for putting this together and to anyone who will be helping out for the competition. I really hope this comes to fruition.

Alex, I'm in too.  Just for reference, how many hours (as an estimate) did you put in on your entry last time?  Yours and Nick Campanelli's blew me away, not to mention all of the other great entries from 2010 that I've just looked at!

I'm still trying to recover from The Recession Club.  But perhaps it is time to move forward with Fiscal Cliff CC.

Great to see some enthusiasm for this!

Cameron, I probably spent a lot more time than I should have  ;). I hesitate to share for I don't want to scare anyone off, but it could have been between 50-100! I can't say for sure though.

Thank you for the compliment. I thought there were many great entries and I know a great deal of thought/work went into them all.

Here's a thought... crowdsourced judging.

That's not to say we eliminate the concept of intelligent/experienced/esteemed architectural minds doing the judging (really, you know who you are and we'd love to have you), but perhaps we can include the sentiments of the golfers. Which course do YOU want to play?

Just an idea, but if incorporated it would not account for 100% of the scoring. Maybe 40% with 3 judges each providing 20%?

Oh, and I will be sure to set criteria for judging, though coming up with a final ranking based on the criteria will likely be the way that goes.

I may be running this contest into the ground, but I would like feedback! Former judges? Thanks.

Alex,
I really like the idea of getting everyone in on the judging -- I know there's tons of guys here who have strong opinions and have done a lot of research/study of golf course architecture but who are not necessarily professionals. At the end of the day, a wider range of opinions can't possibly be a bad thing.

I have lots of topos, if you want a topo.  I would have to think a little while about which would be the best for a competition.  I would probably pick one from a site we didn't build a course on, so that no one else would recognize it.

Not sure I want to enlist myself as a judge, though.

 8) I'm game... just don't give me a topo where I can lay out 45 holes again!

I'm very interested in participating.  I know you wanted to limit the entries to decrease the burden on the judges (if some are found).  Not sure it will come to that but if it does perhaps a public voting (as suggested) to narrow down finalists for the judges.

Forgot to mention, even though I'm coordinating things I would like to submit an entry too. I was thinking I could send my entry to someone not in the contest so they could hold it before everyone else sends their entries in (so I don't look at anyone else's before I'm done). Then I would randomly assign numbers and pass them off to the judges. Cool?

Participants so far:

Alex Miller
Jeb Bearer
Brian "Donald" Ross
Connor Dougherty
Matthew Essig
Cameron DeVries
Ed Oden
V. Kmetz
Steve Lang
Joe Tuschowlski
JR Potts
Don Mahaffey
David Harshbarger
Eric Smith
John McCarthy
Josh Tarble
"Participant"  ;)

That's 16 and any further sign-ups will be alternates. Even in the group that has entered, if anyone is feeling like they may not have the time to finish consider volunteering to collaborate. Thanks.

Yeah, we all know you want to submit your design with the name Charlie Goerges on it.

I'm happy to stand to the side and serve as part of judge's panel...should you be lacking or if there's a crush of entries.

cheers

Often there is a crush of wannabees, and then significantly fewer finishers and entries.

I'll take a poke.  And if my result looks like Shoreacres...
