Golfer's Guide to the Game and the Greens of Scotland
« on: February 04, 2013, 04:19:56 PM »
Stumbled across this work from 1894.  It can be accessed by doing a Google search for the title in Google Books (or from this link, if it works:

http://books.google.com/books?id=_49PAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA125&dq=a.w.+edmondson&source=gbs_selected_pages&cad=3#v=onepage&q&f=false

Did a quick search to see if it has been referred to here, but came up empty.

The book has a series of descriptions of the various Scottish courses existing at the time, including some great old routing maps.  They'd be a great addition to Ed Oden's thread (if they haven't already been added).

Here's the write-up for Hamilton, which contains some sage advice for dealing with unruly guests:

"This course is situated in Barmichael Field, within the grounds of Hamilton Palace.  In case the golfer comes across any of the famed wild cattle he is recommended to put his head between his legs and stare at them.  This is too much for the animal's gravity, and they at once go away."

This looks very interesting, Sven, from the brief snippets that Google Books provides.  Any ideas as to where a complete copy might be obtained?

Cheers

You should be able to hit the EBook - Free button to view the entire work.  You may have to be logged into Google to do so.

Well done Sven, can't say I've heard of this one but note from an excerpt from the book that not only is there a plan of North Berwick but also a description which might be interesting in relation to the 16th.

Niall:

I'm pretty sure the work was republished a couple years later under the name "Golfer's Guide for the United Kingdom."  I haven't compared the two editions, so I'm not sure if the earlier work contains some gems that may have been edited out.

Enjoy,

Sven
