The span of greatness
« on: May 02, 2003, 07:06:02 AM »
I was thinking the other day(a rarity for me)..."which architect had the longest span between his first and last masterpiece."

I think that Pete Dye's longevity is quite impressive with a 34 year span, i believe
Crooked Stick - 1964
Whistling Straits - 1998
(and maybe he has another one in him  ;D)

What other architects have impressive spans like this?

the interviewer asked beck how he felt "being the bob dylan of the 90's" and beck quitely responded "i actually feel more like the bon jovi of the 60's"

It depends on the date you want to use on Dornick Hills, but if you use 1918 (the completion of the first nine) and then probably his last great course Austin Country Club was completed in 1948.  That covers 30 years.  He did two other very good courses after that as well, so you could probably expand it to 1950 if you really wanted.

Colt: Rye (1894) to Royal Portrush (1934) about 40 years.  Although he didn't do very much between Rye and 1910, other than redesign Sunningdale Old and help Mack with Alwoodley.

Mackenzie: Alwoodley (1907) to Crystal Downs (1933) about 26 years.
