GCA golf break Weekend of 16th / 17th March. Mostly Full!
« on: January 10, 2013, 05:16:42 AM »
EDIT, we are now full at Seacroft and have only one space left at Woodhall  If you want to join the group it is stiil possible on other days.  (21 01 2013).

Please note that due the difficulties of finding accomodation and food for this small army, entries will have to be confirmed by the 23 01 2012.  I need to sort this before I go on holiday on so that is now the cut off date unless someone drops out and you can offer to take thier place for the bits they reserved.

I’ve been trying to find an interesting combo for winter golf break.  The last couple of Spring's have seen a group of us head for Burnham and then the Quirky Cotswolds. The previously mentioned Beau Dessert is out and a sensible suggestion was made that Links courses are much less likely to be weather affected, either waterlogged or frozen.  However when I approached Porthcawl I was informed they will be charging summer rates on all weekends throughout the year!

2013       Lincolnshire Lark(?)
Thursday 14th Mildenhall
Friday 15th Brancaster
Saturday   16th Woodhall Spa
Sunday 17th Seacroft

Details

Thursday 14th  Thursday at Royal Worlington & Newmarket Golf Club, aka Mildenhall, aka The Sacred Nine, aka "the best 9 hole golf course in the world."
Its about 60 miles from my house and predictably I’ve never been there, but Ran who lives a long way away has.
http://www.golfclubatlas.com/courses-by-country/england/rwn/

They are be happy to accommodate us and if it all comes together I’ll try and play 9 holes in the morning and 18 in the afternoon.  They only ask that we let them know if we want soup and sandwiches at tluchtime. I imagine most would arrive for an afternoon round?  They are OK with 3 or 4 ball but it would be good if we kept to to the spirit of the place and perhaps swap partners every 9?

Rates
County Card Holder (all day)      £45.00
County Card Holders (18 holes)      £35.00

Individual Visitors (all day)      £60.00
Individual Visitors (18 holes)      £50.00

Friday 15th   Optional  Could be 36 or 18 (PM only)

Royal West Norfolk, aka Brancaster   Ian Symington (Office telephone/fax 01485 210087

Magical place.
http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,28076.msg538356.html#msg538356
Pricing structure
We can go out at 7.45 in the morning and then again from about 1pm.  They are a 2 ball club (which might cause problems with no's?).
Cost
First 18 holes own ball        £65,  as a second round £25

Foursomes   Main round £50 and as a second second £15
However if anyone wanted to play Foursomes and then own ball it would be £50 + £25.

I’m considering going up the night before and playing 36 but will certainly play there in the PM.  Please let me know if you’d be interested in that option.

There will be a tide covering the approach road in the morning so if you are late – swim!
Brancaster to Woodhall spa 2hrs 15 or to Skegness 2 hrs.

Have yet to look into accommodation until I get the level of interest.  Could stay in Brancaster, Kings Lynn or Boston. Thoughts?
Brancaster to Woodhall spa 2hrs 15 or to Skegness 2 hrs.

Saturday  16th
Woodhall Spa
£50.00 for members of the EGU (comes with club membership).   £65 for Scots and other invaders!
3 tee's secured from 12.30.    6 deposits paid £20 each.
Golf Digest has it at no 46 in the World!
http://www.golfdigest.com/golf-courses/2012-05/100-best-golf-courses-outside-us
Ran liked it a lot.
http://www.golfclubatlas.com/courses-by-country/england/woodhall-spa/

Wales vs England 17.00 rugby as we come off the course!

Accommodation
B&B in Skegness.   Oh the joys of a seaside town out of season, what’s not to love.  About 40 mins away.
The No1 rated B&B on Trip Advisor the Kildare Hotel has individual rooms at £50 each.  There’s one twin which would be cheaper to share.
However there is an alternative as the original Butlin’s is in Skegness. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butlins  If there’s enough enthusiasm for a piece of history and a laugh I’ll look into staying there.
I’ll find a restaurant and hopefully will have fallen off the wagon by then.

Sunday 17th.  St Patricks Day

One of Britain’s lessor known quality links is in Skegness.
Seacroft.   3 tee secured from 10am at £30 each (£100 deposit paid).  Which in my view is  also outstanding VFM.
I think the 13th is one of my favourite holes and overall I like it a lot and so does Ran even if it will never make the world top 250.

http://www.golfclubatlas.com/courses-by-country/england/seacroft1/

The place has some history.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FRANCES-GOLF-CHAMPION-MASSEY-TAYLOR-MATCH-1907-GOLF-POSTCARD-SEACROFT-LINKS-/280979210157?pt=UK_Collectables_Postcards_MJ&hash=item416baa7fad

So here’s the story.

As time is short I’m looking to have the whole thing sorted in the next two weeks and so just Yes votes please. Once you’re in, you’re in. I won’t be taking deposits and you will owe me unless you find someone else to take your place.

It would be fun to play the weekend as a Stableford comp, with a £10 entry and handicap adjustments after the first round. Please indicate Y/N if you're keen on the idea.

I’m going on holiday on the 25th of this month for two weeks so I need to firm up these bookings by then. The max no is 12 people and it’s on a first come basis.  If you can’t let me know by the 24th then you’ll have to take a chance that things are still available. Sorry to hustle but I will be playing catch up at work when I return.

Hope to see you then.

PS suggestions for a name, now we have a third iteration?

Tony,

Well done for organising.  I'm very tempted by the weekend (Brancaster is a joy, but a long, long haul from Newcastle).  Only issue is that I have just agreed a trip on the Monday and Tuesday to Turnberry and Prestwick!  I'll let you know by end of next week.

Mark
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

I may well be interested in this trip.

Suggestions:

1. Seeing as the tee at Woodhall isn't on until 12ish, perhaps stay in Hunstanton the Friday night.  There is The Neptune which has rooms and probably does a b&b & dinner package (Michelin restaurant) which may not be overly expensive for twin rooms.

2. The Lincolnshire Lark.

Tony:

Please save me a spot for your golf weekend at Brancaster and Woodhall Spa in mid March.  It's my birthday and I will have to get approval from home, so it will be a few days before I can confirm, but I would love to get back there [and definitely Royal Worlington, too].

Didn't want to post on the thread because I don't want anyone else coming or not coming based on my plans.

Edit:  Oops, meant to make that a PM, but the internet link crashed while I was doing it and I got back in the wrong place.  Now that everyone has seen it anyway, I won't delete it, but you would all be better served not counting on my travel schedule!

This is very tempting :-\

How long does it take to drive from London (LHW possibly) to Brancaster? I know it depends a lot on the time of day, but a rough estimate would do.

Donal,

Google maps says three hours, so with quiet traffic probably two and a half.  Probably less than 2 hours from Stansted, if you can fly to there.

Thanks Mark; three-ish hours isn't too bad. The flight options from ultima Thule (aka Stockholm) are quite limited, so it would likely be Heathrow.

Tony,

Thanks for arranging this!

Please put me down for the Saturday and Sunday. Its been too long since I played Woodhall and I've never managed to get to Seacroft so I'm certainly looking forwards to this.

I may also be able to join you at Brancaster, but wouldn't be able to confirm till nearer the time. Please don't take this as me being unappreciative of your efforts so far, BUT... Brancaster would make a great weekend combined with Hunstanton, perhaps at another time, next year??? However RW&N on the Friday would probably really convince me to make it a 3 day affair? Is it too late to tweak the plans?

Cheers,

James

Still you could always organise that one next year!

Hi Tony,

I was enjoying the first post in this thread and was looking forward to going to this until at the end of the post put a spanner in the works as I normally go to the biggest match of the year!!

I will keep my options open and will let you know at a later date if I am able to attend

Tom D - I would be happy to join you at Royal Worlington as it is just over a hour's drive away from my pad plus I owe you a pint of proper English beer! Just IM me anytime

GCA'ers - this is a great trio of golf courses to play within 3 days! Brancaster is the most fun I have had on a course for ages, Woodhall's bunkers must be seen as well as the challenge to escape out of them and Seacroft is a gem of a links with some great natural features as hazards.

Cheers
Ben

Tony, No problem.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be awkward, my guard was down as it was late at night. Perhaps I subconsciously figured that someone is usually awkward and posts a "why didn't you organise it this way" type response...  ::) To which the proper response shouldn't be as polite as yours, but more along the lines of "if thats how you want to do it, you f#####g organise it!" ;D

Look forward to catching up!

Cheers,

James

Count me in for some of this.  Friday and Saturday for me.  Debating whether to drive up after work on Thurs for a 36 Friday, but would probably head home after play on Saturday if you're off to Skeggy for the night.

Thanks for suggesting this years spring trip.  Long wanted to see Brancaster.

I am in for at least some of this gig if there is space.  Brancaster sounds interesting for Friday afternoon if 4somes is of the table and guys are staying put for the night.  If folks are moving on to Woodhall that night than I would probably give it a miss.  Hunstanton sounds good too if Brian can't find anybody else to play with him.

Its awful tempting to do TS9 as well, but I don't think it will work this trip.  I need to see it at some point so if anybody is keen to hit the road let me know.

Welcome Robin, Brian and Sean.

It makes sense to stay in Brancaster (or at a stretch Kings Lynn which has a lovely centre).  Will look for places next week,

Re the Neptune the website says only 6 rooms and the 'special Dinnner and B&B rate' until Thursday's only, is £210 pppn.  Probably too rich for many.

Shaping up nicely.

Tony,

As an annual visitor to Hunstanton taking part in the East Anglian Foursomes.

http://www.hunstantongolfclub.com/visitors/open-competitions/

There are plenty of B+B's around - the ones that are near Hunstanton GC are pretty useful and not too far from Brancaster

Caley Hall Hotel - is right by the access road to the entrance of Hunstanton

Le Strange Arms - about 200m away from Hunstanton clubhouse

There is the old stables in Thorham and plenty of good B+B's in Thornham, Titchwell and Brancaster Staithe which are all between Hunstanton and Brancaster

Looking forward to playing Hunstanton this year as the course has been mostly rebunkered by Gordon Irvine and greens almost restored to normal :)

Hope this helps

Cheers

I'm going to pitch camp on Thursday night at the Premier Inn in Kings Lynn, so will be around for 36 on Friday at RWN.

I appreciate you're still considering the accommodation options for Friday night, but the Kings Lynn Premier Inn is offering rooms for £19 just now.  That's where I'm booked in.  Just a thought for those staying that night who don't want to blow out on the cost of a bed!

Kings Lynn GC is also a hidden gem of a golf course - to be fair it is the best Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas' designed course in my view. It makes me wonder why didn't they design more courses like this rather than the Floridan style course design as shown evident at the Belfry etc.

It is tree lined like Woburn (i think it is better than Woburn) and has some great rolling fairway holes like the 2nd, 3rd and 4th holes. The 8th is a tough par 4 and the 9 is a rollercoaster par 5 so is 10. It is on a sandy base which allows for the running game.

If you have the opportunity to play it - take it!.

Sorry mate, on Friday night, we'll be dining on Michelin star cuisine (the Neptune) while you are disrupted at 4 AM by the sound of Kings Lynn crime (drugs / prostitution, murder) . Is the £19 price tag worth it?
