There is no nudity, profanity, sex or violence in the actual footage of "Writer's Cramp" either.

This assertion of moral purity does not, however, include post-wrap activities by some of the younger and less discrete members of our extended production family.

That is so far out, it is in.

Jud,

We simply cannot omit the following Genesis offerings:

Nursery Cryme
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
Selling England by the Pound
Trick of the Tale
Wind & Wuthering

Everything after that was commercialized dreck, but these still soar. As I write this, my iTunes is blasting "Blood on the Rooftops."

Yeah, Lamb probably should be included.  Pesonally I'm partial to Genesis Live, warts and all. Saw Gabriel's first solo tour in Detroit.  Small theater, Lamb encore, nuff said.  Also Genesis at the Garden in '77.  There's obviously a lot more once you probe beyond the surface.  Ever get into Gentle Giant or King Crimson?

I don't know whether to be proud or embarassed by this thread.  Names mentioned so far that I have absolutely no idea who they are:

Cecil Taylor
Robert Rodriguez
Robert Hunter (assuming he's not the author of "The Links")
Phil Lesh
Waveya
Mickey Hart
Brent Mydland
Rick Wright
Roger Waters
Dolphy
Mingus
Ken Vandermark
Darlene Love
Little Steven
David Gilmour
Bob Weir
Joe Perry
Stan Kenton
Joe Pass
Kermit Ruffin
Marcello Calabrese

Not to mention what I assume are names of bands.

Lest I be kicked out of the treehouse, I have performed on the stage of the Ryman Auditorium three times (and don't particularly care for the new floor). So I have that going for me.  I also own a Fender Newporter acoustical guitar.

Don't feel bad, I haven't heard of half that list.  Mind you, a large chunk of them are The Dead - so not great loss there.  To top it off, Gib brings up Genesis.  With the exception of Pink Floyd (and I have never figured out why they are included), I despise prog rock (its right there with heavy metal and rap) of any era, but Genesis, Gentle Giant and Yes top all bills.

My guilty pleasure is listening to Whipping Post and not getting bored around the 10 minute mark.

Yer killin' me.  You want me to spend $20 on a King Crimson cd?  I showed that to my wife who laughed.  I use that cd as coaster, but not just now.  That honour belongs to AC/DC.  I have an old high school mate big on KC and he sends me their cds quite diligently, for 25 years now.  Look, I have only just trained myself to tolerate Rush (seriously, a 12 year labour of hate) - go easy my friend.

I was a rock critic in college the late 70's (small feat, not to be confused with Little Feat)  and I have to agree with Jason Thurman's "dadrock" reference. Fuhgeddaboudit!  It's over.  But if you want to buy a cd that's emblematic of some of the best music of the 60's, 70's, and 80's, get the 30th anniversary Bob Dylan concert from Madison Square Garden, featuring everybody from Johnny Cash to Eddie Vedder. Three hours of great music. The DVD is awesome too. I'd keep typing, but it's damn near bedtime for me...

I can't relate to most of the dadrock love on this thread,...

 ;)

I mean, don't get me wrong. I went through the phase and all that. But it just gets really... boring.

I love guitars. I've got 9 of them. That's probably part of the problem for me. Hang out with musicians, and you inevitably hear way too many people hacking their way through the meat and potatoes of classic rock. I'm over it. Given the choice, I'd much rather play along with someone who's come up with a guitar version of Gangnam Style than another guy who wants to know which part of "Wish You Were Here" I'd rather play.

Jason,

What guitars do you have?  I've got a 74 Martin D-41, a late 90s Suhr Custom Strat and an early 90s Fender Custom Shop Tele which I put through a vintage Mesa Tremoverb.  I agree from a playing perspective I have little interest in most classic rock covers.

Jud, I don't carry anything too exciting. I have a mid 90s Epiphone Sheraton thinline that I've rewired with PAF reissues, an old Fender acoustic, a Washburn 12-string, a homemade electric that my grandfather built in the '50s that still has the original P90 in it, and assorted pieces of junk. I still think I can talk my grandfather out of his 1948 Martin D18 someday too.

I run the electrics through a Hot Rod DeVille 2x12. I'm reworking the pedalboard right now but I've used a 545Q Crybaby and a Voodoo Labs OD for about 14 years now. I usually also have a delay, a second OD, and a flanger.

I hate on dadrock like Gib hates on Psy, but there's a difference between stale crap and secret artifacts. My rule in bands was that we only do covers that would "make the world a better place." Another band covering "Black Dog" or "Comfortably Numb" or "Honky Tonk Women" isn't going to make the world a better place. But a good cover of "Rocks Off" or "It Takes a lot to Laugh, it Takes a Train to Cry" or "Waiting for the Man" might.

In my bag:

1975 Martin D-35
1975 Fender Stratocaster

My last gig was playing for the Stillwater CC women's Christmas party in December. It could have been my farewell live performance ("I Saw Her Standing There" was pretty bad; "Pretty Woman" okay), but I still play guitar almost every day.

Jason,

Check out Fulltone effects (and cables now).  A little pricey but worth it.  Couldn't live without my deja vibe.

Steve,

60 Strat?  That's a membership my man!  Zappa was awesome.  Saw him several times, but he's an aquired taste for most.  His guitar playing got overshadowed by the bawdy comedy.  Remember the women's underwear tour?  My son's favorite song is 'Why Does It Hurt When I Pee?'.  His greatest contribution may have been fighting the censorship wars in Congress.

Jud,
FZ was a top favorite since seeing him in Fall 1970 with the F&E lineup.. probably saw him 7-8 times can't remember... every show, though he'd put out some great solo stuff , that's why the shut up and play yer guitar compilations were so good, but some can only take so much, like Schoenberg.  The strat is stripped to one humbucker direct wired to the plug...

Rick,
My last open gig was at the St Rita's School for the Deaf, Spring Dance 1974, .. yes really, once the kids took off their hearing aids they really got into it!

I get pretty stupid thinkin back to those daze,
