Resurrecting this topic for the sake of a friend traveling to the area during the week of Thanksgiving. He's a strong, low single-digit player who doesn't mind spending a bit of money but wants good value. Figure a round limit of around $100, and he'd be looking for a public course that won't be too hard for a single or a twosome to get on during the holiday week. Staying in Lake Buena Vista and can drive a bit, but not too far. World Woods might be an option, but Streamsong is too far and too expensive. His favorite courses tend to be modern, though he enjoys a pretty wide variation, and he's not going to be overwhelmed by a course that's long and tough.

Is there anything he should consider outside of the options already mentioned?

Mission Inn - El Campeon, Southern Dunes, Victoria Hills, Deltona Club (condition isn't very good)...wish Sugarloaf Mtn hadn't closed.

Just an FYI, Streamsong is closer to LVB than World Woods.

If your friend is looking for a game while in Orlando, PM me.  We have a regular Saturday game, and everyone is welcome.  We have guys shooting from mid-60's to mid-80's.  Part Stabbleford and part Skins.  Play at an average Orlando public course.  $30 ($35 winter) green fee and $25 for the game.  It's a lot of fun.  Pretty serious golf with a couple of beers and some laughs.

I am playing Grand Cypress New tomorrow and then the Championsgate courses over the weekend.  I have never golfed in Orlando, so will post my thoughts of each course once I get back.

It'll be about a 45 minute drive for him, but El Campeon at Mission Inn is a great golf course, Streamsong would be about an hour and a half away. Southern Dunes is a good option that isn't too far.  North Shore that Will is talking about is a really enjoyable course in my opinion.  Bella Collina is a half hour from him or so and is worth the drive.  Orange County National is also a pretty good track and wouldn't be too far.

Thanks to J for getting this started back up for me.

I am staying in Lake Buena Vista area Thanksgiving week and will probably try to get 2-3 rounds/days of golf in while I am there.  Might devote one day to going out to World Woods.  Would love to do Streamsong, but don't think the wife will give me a day to go that far, all day, for that much money.  World Woods seems more in doable even if it is a touch farther.  Should have the schedule soon to know if I can devote an entire day.

Many people have recommended Southern Dunes, so that is almost certainly on the list.  Have gotten suggestions from some others I know as well as reading this thread.  Would like to narrow it down to 2-3 more, with the possibility of jumping in a game or hooking up with someone while down there.  I am not 100% sure Saturday will be an option for the game Will mentioned, but should know for sure soon. Any and all thoughts appreciated.

I enjoyed Grand Cypress New, which is Nicklaus' ode to the Old Course.  It's a fun lay out and regardless of any perceived likeness to SAO, is a good course in its own right.  I also played both Championsgate courses, which were only ok and not worth going out of your way to play them.

I'll give another nod to Bella Collina as well.

Just wanted to bring this to the top to see if Will or anyone had any games planned for this coming week while I am down there.  I have plans to get to Southern Dunes for sure, but the rest is up in the air with no solid plans due to family scheduling ambiguity and some other connections I am waiting to find out if they end up being options.

I enjoyed Southern Dunes while I was down there recently.  I am sure many on here will also say Southern Dunes is probably the course to hit while in the area as far as a public goes.

Agreed about Southern Dunes, Adam.

My last round there left me with one of my favorite sports stories ever.  I was in a threesome and the starter asked if a gentleman from Canada could join us.  We said of course.  Lo' and behold, it was Bill Friday, the rather famous NHL/WHA referee.  I'm a fan of hockey so I was thrilled to hear his stories for 4 1/2 hours.  He reffed the first WHA game, which was in Philly at the old Convention Center.  They had a promotion for the game with 5000 orange hockey pucks given out to fans.  Well, after the last pre-game skatearound, the Zamboni came out and somehow part of the rink collapsed in the corner.  Nobody really knew what to do.  You couldn't possibly cancel the first game of the new WHA league, could you?

Well, after much discussion and delays, Friday took charge and said he wasn't going to ref a game with yellow police tape cordoning off part of the rink!  He grabs the PA mic and announces the game is canceled.  Of course, you know what happens next:  many of those orange give-away pucks came raining down on him!

I played in October and thought the conditions were ok.  I have been wanting to play again, so if you want someone to play with, let me know.

See the Cocoa Beach thread. Someone just played Deltona for $21. That is not good. Deltona was a personal favorite when it was re-done, but at that price point, conditioning is a real problem.

Think about Highlands Reserve or Harmony instead.

Grande Pines has been mentioned in the past.  If you're near the theme parks and don't want to travel that far, its a decent option.

I played it five or six years ago on a trip planned by others that included Grand Cypress, Southern Dunes, Celebration, Mystic Dunes, Orange County National and Grande Lakes.  Grande Pines was the course I knew the least about going in, and it was the pleasant surprise of the trip.

Unless they have used a fleet of D 9s or tons of C4 stay away from Bella Colina, still having nightmares. Besides I hate snakes.
We have a pool and a pond, the pond would be good for you.

I've played Deltona the last three days and as you can hopefully see by the pics the conditioning is ok and improved from a year ago. After a slow start the course really gets going on the third hole with an outstanding stretch through the seventh. The eighth through tenth route back around the clubhouse with so-so holes. The course gets going again with a very good stretch of holes eleven to seventeen. Eight-teen is squeezed in to get back to the Club House. Despite the softening of green fees to extremely low levels they have maintained the fairway width and bunkering/waste areas. The greens were in good condition. The fairways roll out nicely. Other local courses over seeded and Deltona did not. Overall a real bargain at less than $25.

Has anyone played at The Reunion resort just outside of Orlando? If so, I would appreciate your thoughts.

Hey Keith,

I have played the Reunion courses.
I think you would like the Palmer and the Watson. Very playable and always in great shape.
NIcklaus course is nice, but really small greens and some difficult approach shots.

well worth the visit though.
