I don't know but I love this quote about nerds:

That's the wonderful thing with nerds: they're enthusiasts. Not having a life means you get to love things with a passion and nobody bothers you about it.”

Dorks tuck their shirts in on the course. Nerds don't.

A nerd takes a half day vacation during a busy work week to walk with an architect as he reviews rough grading with the shapers.

A dork starts asking/questioning the architect about a feature or two during said meeting.

I resembled both of those earlier this week. :-\  ;D

Dorks rate for magazines.
Nerds rate for the NCRDB.

What made me ask the question was an article I was reading:
This was in it.

Geek (n.)- Someone who spends a lot of time and energy in a certain area, not necessarily computers or technology; An outwardly normal person who has taken the time to learn technical skills. They are generally not athletic and enjoy video games, comic books, being on the internet, etc.

Nerd (n.)- A socially awkward person who has learned technical skills due to the spare time they enjoy from being generally neglected; one whose IQ exceeds his weight.

Dork (n.)- Someone who has odd interests and is often silly at times. A dork is also someone who can be themselves and not care what anyone thinks. Dorks are typically more noted for their quirky personality.

In short:
Geek- Smart but not awkward
Nerd- Smart and awkward
Dork- Smart in less useful areas, awkward but proud regardless

I think it says it pretty well....

Mike -

You're a nerd, I'm a dork.

Dorks look up to nerds, and want to be like them. Dorks dream of being nerds.

Nerds like dorks, because dorks look up to them. Dorks are pleased to be of service.

Ah - but the thing is, nerds don't know they're nerds, while dorks know themselves only to well.

In short, it's cooler to be a nerd than a dork, but less self aware.

 :)

These words and their definitions really fall woefully short of capturing the level of nerdy behavior espoused and embodied by so many of us on this site.

Take Mark Pritchett for example...Super Geek Extraordinaire is a more apt description but still only just begins to scratch the surface.

Or Bart Bradley...my, oh my, oh my...I think it is best I don't even start down the slippery slope that is required to captured his golf nerd status.

Mac:

Like any good geek would say "it takes one to know one".

Happy Thanksgiving my friend.   You definitely want to stay off the slippery slope ....

I'll tell this story on myself.

Ed Oden, my friend Bryan, my son Matt, and I are playing European Club this summer.  Ed hits into a fairway bunker that has sleepers on the front face.  Ed says "I am going to see what happens if I bank it off those sleepers (geek)".  I reply:  "It won't work.  The angle of reflection always equals the angle of incidence.  Physics bro. (geek)"  My son falls down laughing at my level of my geekitude.

Ed unfortunately hits under the ball with a 3 wood, popping it softly just over the top of the sleepers into the high grass and says "Oh, so that's what happens".

Cool so I'm definitely a geek.

Wait, that was fairly arrogant, perhaps I am actually a nerd.

Though I've been wrong twice now...I seem to in fact be a dork.

Take Mark Pritchett for example...

Mark's Dixie Cup captain's speech at Kinloch would live on in infamy if any of us geeks would have remembered to record it.
Or the boat trip back from Haig.
Pritchett can go into stand up comedy or write for "Family Guy" anytime he wants.

A geek drives across country to play one course for one day.  He walks and carries at least 54 holes playing only vintage hickories while taking copious notes and pictures along the way... A dork does the exact same thing except he wears plus fours and wakes up the next morning with a sticky scorecard lying beside him...

Mark's running commentary on the way back from Haig Point was priceless. Brandon Johnson from Arnold Palmer Golf will never be the same. ;D

I've a serious question:

Assuming one has family, does reading/posting on a golf course architecture website, on Thamksgiving or any other significant Holiday, qualify you as a "Dork", "Nerd" or kind of pathetic?

**Those residing/vacationing outside of the US don't qualify.

Football isn't on yet.
