courses with no tee markers
« on: November 20, 2012, 10:00:29 PM »
looking to compile a list of courses with no tee markers for everyday member play.

Obviously, I know Ballyneal is at the top of the list.   What are the other ones?

Not looking to include unofficial courses , eg sheep ranch

Double Eagle is the only one I've personally seen without tee markers. The tee boxes have yardage plaques but no actual tee markers.

The Dunes Club, in Michigan, does not have tee markers. The members prefer match play and whomever wins the hole you gets to choose spot where you tee off next.

I don't have any to add, but just wanted to note that this will be my new "must play" list... I love the no tee markers concept!

I think this would be a novelty that would lose much attraction after a short time.  Don't most courses remove the markers for late season rounds?  If so - what do you do?  I wind up playing the plates 90% of the time resulting in less variety than if the markers were out.

I also would think this approach would lead to uneven wear on tees for courses that get more than a nominal amount of play.

I am also all  for this, and enjoyed the philosophy at BN, but perhaps on Jason's point - not really sure Australians, who mostly play competition golf would be up for a club or course set up with a philosophy for predominantly matchplay with the 'winner chooses next tee option' - although I love it. Afraid I am probably in the minority... :(

I didn't dislike it at Ballyneal, but a few months down the track I can't say that the absence of tee markers was among the many things I remember really fondly that added to a wonderful experience.

So I guess I'm indifferent.

I love this concept and would advocate it where possible.... Trouble is it is very difficult for all but a few clubs due to competitions etc... - It's a tough sell but really it shouldn't be with the markers just put out especially for each weekly medal - then you have society play and suddenly it becomes even harder.... But have to say that even when there are tee-markers out, I often ignore them, playing a mix of plates depending on what takes my fancy - probably not what the greenkeeper wants... Call it a guilty pleasure...

Scott - do you think the likes of a Ballyneal model would have worked here in Australia, obviously at Ellerston it doesn't matter what you do... could Lost Farm have been or be set up like that - it probably doesnt make that much difference, but most golfers seem to want to play to a specific distance or set of tees.

Burnham's yearly flag comp opened my eyes to all the great and varied tees on the course.  Whenever I get the chance, I encourage guests to play match play with the honouree choosing the tee.  If nobody is about I will take folks onto out of play tees which are rarely used.  In the UK, I can't see any reason for tee markers if there is no comp on.  They would not be out most days if it were up to me.

Brett,

I reckon it could work at Barny simply due to the absence of GA comps that would insist on it.

Really, one of the major complaints you hear from travelling golfers is that the tees were too far forward, so I can't see why those guys wouldn't love being able to tee it as far back as they liked...

Thats an interesting comment. Where I'm a member of now and where I was a member previously, you're free to pick and mix including the championship tees, not only to spread wear and tear but also to stop the championship tees from "going soft" due to lack of play. Is that not the norm these days ?

Hi Niall, it probably still is the norm but usually on courses with separate designated areas, the greenkeeper will of course move the markers about on that particular area to spread wear... So whilst you can mix and match areas without any harm, in principle I suppose you should more or less stick to where he puts the markers.... But it's a very small infringement if you don't I guess.... I like the idea that it makes no difference more...

Not sure if they still do it but Muirfield Village did not used to have tee markers

There are suggested teeing grounds for blue, black, white etc., but no actual markers.

courses with no tee markers - without a teeing ground being obvious - are OK for practice or wanker play or other games, but not for golf.   When Devil's Pulpit first opened they had no defined teeing ground each hole, although they had six sets of "tees".  Nice, but not golf.
Players couldn't return a score for handicap purposes, etc.

Nial, how does a tee go soft?

I don't understand the attraction, other than it being novel.  Golf is playing from the teeing ground to the hole.  Hard to do that without a teeing ground.   ;D

I have yet to play a course with no tee markers, however if a great course does not have tee markers, then shouldn't the obvious place to play from be just off the previous green (far enough away to be safe) in the direction of the next hole? That would be my ideal course without tee markers...one that offers a completely smooth routing tee to green!

As a course super I can tell that I loath tee markers.  They are a pain to move, align and maintain.  Members always seem to think they know how to set up the course better than the staff and the type, color, size and shape is always a topic for debate.  I would love to eliminate the markers but the "sheep" must be able to make certain that everyone plays the "same course".

At wolf point safety is not a concern
I have started the next hole with one foot on 12 different greens, Don probably all of them.
