Hurricane Sandy's impact on Long Island golf courses
« on: November 15, 2012, 09:25:35 AM »
I'm curious if anyone knows what kind of damage courses on Long Island experienced
from hurricane Sandy.  I was in Boston playing golf with some friends on friday the day before it hit and had tee times for
Saturday and Sunday at The National Golf Links and Shinnecock Hills.  Lots of great courses out there.

Kevin,

Did you get to play the courses on Saturday or Sunday?

I know Maidstone had some significant damage to the 15th tee.  I would be surprised if the 9th tee wasn't affected too.
2011 highlights- Royal Aberdeen, Loch Lomond, Moray Old, NGLA (always a pleasure), Muirfield Village, Saucon Valley, watching the new holes coming along at The Renaissance Club.

We elected to not take the ferry from Boston over to Long Island so we didn't get to play The National or Shinnecock.  Unfortunate, but in hindsight, if we coud have played we probably would have been playing in hurricane strength winds and probably wouldnt have gotten back to Boston for a few days.  We did get to play Eastward Ho and The Country Club at Brookline instead.

I would guess that courses like Bayonne and Maidestone might have had significant damage.  Anybody got photos?

Kevin, tough that you only managed Ho and the Country Club ;D
I am sure you manged to get over the dismay of not taking the ferry...that could have been a rough ride.

Kevin,
What were your thoughts on Eastward Ho?  I think its phenomenal and vastly under rated.

back to topic at hand:

much flooding to the courses on the south shore.

rumor's abounding that the famous Lido lost 3 holes as a result. as you know it's in lido beach / long beach. a shame. my guess is 5 and 13 are most certainly gone as they run parallel to the water. maybe six as well given that its tee is near the water and has an interior lake on it too. again this is the rumor please don't quote me as doctrine.

also heard that a clubhouse was condemned at a club near/in oceanside.

Really a shame to think of all the great courses on Long Isand that could be permanently altered.  Any word on The National?

Mark,  I would agree. Eastward Ho is really quite good and can't say that I had eve heard much about it prior to visiting there right before Sandy.  Nice green complexes and bunkering. quite. Few blind approaches but I think it was within reason given all the positive attributes.  It's my understanding that Keith Foster was in and did some work there a few years ago. The were in the process of redoing some of the bounce faces when I was there.

NGLA ok; Hamptons not nearly as damaged this time as Rockaways and Long Beach Island near NYC.

Also, the real major damage was caused by the tidal surge.  National has a few holes where the greens were vulnerable (i.e. #'s 14 and 17) on Bull's Head Bay, but the course is, otherwise, elevated and/or not close to the water.

Maidstone, on the other hand, has several holes right on the beach and is rightfully considered an oceanside course.  If all they lost were a few tee boxes next to the sea wall, that says volumes about how being 100 miles to the east of JFK Airport was far preferable.  During the famous 1938 hurricane, the opposite was true.

Thank god for that!  If so, you would probably still be somewhere between Buzzard's Bay and Block Island, regardless of the weather.... :)

one long island club has not made it through sandy. Middle Bay will not be opening for 2013 or the future.
