O/T apps for golf courses
« on: September 24, 2012, 12:10:33 AM »
I was wondering if anyone had any experience with an app for their club or course. Make tee times,  get alerts about lunch specials, or anything else it is used for.   Is it something you like and is it usefull to you?  Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

Lance,

Check with Jeff Shelman, he does lots of stuff in conjunction with his club, I just can't remember if an app is one of those things.

Lance,
At our club we have a website, that recognises users viewing platform, so if you log on via your smartphone, you are then able to save as "an app" and converts to a mobile version of the site, this allows us to book, change or cancel tee times, reserve a cart, book other members and guests in, view upcoming events, member directory, etc we then have a separate system to notify all players of their tee time booking 2-5 days in advance depending on the clubs chosen notification period. This can be be useful if friends or opponents have booked you in to confirm tee time, tee and course.

Of course, there is the members home page, that has latest news, local rules, etc and we use facebook and twitter to advise of other bits and pieces.

For all intents and purposes, this appears as an app.

Lance,
Would this be for a public or private golf club?

I know that CommonGround in Aurora, Colorado has an app that can be downloaded off iTunes.  If I recall correctly, it even has an integrated GPS yardage guide so you can get distances while playing the course.

EDIT:
Here is the link: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/commonground-golf-course/id472720622?mt=8

The Dorado Beach East course (in Puerto Rico) had a pretty good app that included a hole-by-hole yardage guide with GPS, allowed you to make tee times, etc.  You can find it in the app store.

Mr Malley, not for any specific club.
I am more interested in its functionality and whether it is worth peoples time download and use them.  Is it something you think will catch on or not?

The Dye Course at French Lick had a sign on the counter that you could scan with a smart phone and automatically download their app.  The aff was very cool basically being a digital yardage book, but it was interactive as you moved around the course the GPS knew where you were exactly.  In portriat orientation you had a map of the hole with real time yardages to various items.  if you turned the phone to landscape orientation it kicked into a mode that gave you a flyover view of the hole.

Very cool, I used it quite a bit that day.  And it is still on my phone today, I like opening it up and seeing that I am 355miles from the first hole as I sit in my home office.
