I've had the great pleasure of playing the PDGC of WV.  I really, really liked it.

It is a tough test of golf, but it has options that allow you to attack holes for par/birdie...or play for the par/bogey.  This is the aspect of Dye that I find brilliant.

I thought it was stunning, even with the goofy walk through the coal mine.  I liked the front nine a little better.  There were a few holes on the back nine that didn't measure up to the rest of the course.  I didn't think it was anymore difficult than most of Pete's courses.

I really liked the golf course.  Yes, it was hard, but it was a lot of fun if you just let yourself enjoy the day and not worry about score.

My only complaint is that the 18th was the use of that good old Mr. Dye 18th hole template - a long, tough hole with water all the way up the left side.

Conversely, the 17th green made me laugh the first time I saw it from the road (and I laughed in a good way).  Can you say "mogul field"?

I played it last Friday.  It is a fantastic golf course and certainly very playable if you play from the correct tees.  Question is whether you realize your own limitations.  If you think you are better than you are, the angles on this golf course will eat you up.  But play conservatively and a bogey is pretty easy on every hole.  I am nowhere close to a great golfer and I shot 77 and 74 for my 2 rounds off the Dye tees (between Back and Middle - 6,850 yards)

I think both 9s are equally good.  The highlights on the front are #2, #4, #5, #8 and #9.  The highlights on the back are #10, #14, #15, #16 and #18.  Only holes that I think suffer in comparison are #1 and #11.  Solid holes, but not a ton of interest to them.

I personally love the green on #17, but it is pretty difficult for the average golfer as there is not much room to land your ball and have it stay up.

Highly recommend playing if given the chance.  Certainly deserves its ranking by Golfweek.

Although Pete Dye Golf Club is private, it looks like there are playing opportunities for non-members:

"The Pete Dye Golf Club offers a limited number of unaccompanied tee times on a daily basis to non-members. The unaccompanied rate is $175 per person which includes greens/cart fees as well as range balls. All unaccompanied tee times must be made in advance by contacting Jeff Koski at (304) 842-2801."

Agreed.  As an old man, higher handicapper, I would with Mr. George.  I played several years ago from a more forward set of tees, though I do not remember exactly what they were, and enjoyed the course.  I thought it was fun and fair - not all that difficult.  As noted, the 17th green is a quirky one, but since there's only one like it on the course, I can live with it.

I had the fortune to see PDGC a couple years ago in the fall, was really a great take, probably the best Dye I have played!

The best stretches for me were the ends of each nine, plus #2.

Makes a great double with Pikewood if you can swing it.

I'd have to play the 17th a few more times before I came to a conclusion as to whether it's quirky good or quirky bad. Initial prognosis was the latter, but I could be swayed.

I'd argue you didn't miss the shot by 10 feet or inches.  Rather you hit the wrong shot.

How about this for number 17 green?  A little bit of a joke, a little bit of fun, to liven you up toward the end of the round.  In other words, let's lighten up and enjoy ourselves.
