Strantz and the Shore
« on: September 03, 2012, 04:34:53 PM »

In going through my golf library I re-discovered a copy of the Shore Course Reconstruction Project that Mike Strantz presented to the members of MPCC. back in 2002.

It has twenty pages (13in.x 10in) and his color renderings of every hole are quite beautiful.

Although my sons can and do play from time to time, I cannot say that golf course architecture is of much interest to them. I would prefer the booklet to go to a practicing architect and if I draw a blank there I'll open it up for anyone who may be interested.

Bob,

I am friends with Mike's widow, Heidi. She has begun collecting Mike's schetches and drawings in order to preserve them for their daughters. If you do not get a proper taker for your offering Heidi might be very interested in adding the Shore Course presentation to her collection. I would be happy to contact her on your behalf.

Bob,         Should Mike Strantz's widow already have this presentation booklet, our own Jay Blasi may find it useful with the launch of his new design firm. In any case , many architects would find it intriguing given Mike's detailed sketches.

I would add to what Mike has written that you can purchase prints of Mike's original sketches from the website below.  There are several Monterey prints available.

Some of the proceeds from the sale of each print go to assist families of cancer patients with lodging and meals.  I've purchased prints of #8 and #14 at True Blue, and they are lovely.

It is a great opportunity to acquire some truly unique golf art AND do good things with your dollars as well.  Think about it.

It would be wonderful if there were an on-line repository of all of Mike's sketches.

I have never seen hole renderings that were either as artistic as Stranz's of MPCC Shore or as faithful to the final product.  I was and remain blown away by those renderings.

On a side note, has anyone heard what Forrest Fezler has been doing in the design field?

Bob,

Did you find a home for your book?

Michael,

I did indeed.

If he he doesn't see it Robin Hiseman would be a most worthy recipient. He posts on GCA, and works for European Golf Design. However he is personally working on an appreciation of Stranz, all self funded from his Surrey base.

As my daughter's name is Robin he had an inside track. Seriously though, he was the first architect to contact me.

Bob,

Good choice! I know Robin quite well. He is a good friend. We spent a week together last November touring Strantz' courses in the South Carolina low country, conducting interviews of Strantz' colleagues for his book, and eating some fine SC seafood!

I know Robin is very appreciative of receiving the presentation booklet.
