Teeth of the Dog, Banff, Top US 100, early 70s, pics
« on: August 26, 2012, 02:10:10 PM »
I have wanted to scan some images from this book I have had forever called "Great Golf courses of the World". It was published in the early 1970s by Golf Digest. There are a ton of photos, with most of the world's famous courses of the time being represented. Most of the pics look pretty much as expected, except Teeth of the Dog.
I know Dye has worked on teeth of the Dog all his career but I was struck but 2 things:
1. The bunkers after the course opened look nothing like the bunkers do now, in fact they don't look like any bunkers I have ever seen of Dye. Here is a scan of the 15th (I believe!) green.

2. The par 3 7th has been "cleaned up" alot. Check how cool it looks in this photo as an island of green in the sand!

On a different note, I think this photo of Banff just look really cool. The bunkering is really amazing. Honestly, the way the bunkering is stacked almost reminds me of Dye, but with Thompson flair!

And for those of you who are into such things, the book includes the Top 100 from the early 70s (you can barely make it out, but notice Cypress Point in the Fifth ten, also no NGLA  ???):

There are a ton more pics, but I am too lazy to scan them right now. Anyways, those pics are the one's that always strike me when I open the book. Hope you enjoyed it!

Matt:

Several hurricanes have had a role in "cleaning out" the bunkers on the 7th at Teeth of the Dog.

Also, did you notice where Cypress Point placed in that old GOLF DIGEST ranking?

It is now called BallenIsles Country Club and the course was completely renovated by Keith Foster a few years ago.

I always thought Lakeview in Morgantown, WV was much closer in quality/prestige to Cypress than it gets credit for these days.

Does anyone have a current picture of the 7th hole at Teeth of the Dog for contrast. The picture posted by Matt sure looks like the hole has plenty of "bite" and I can only image that the 2012 version is considerably softer.

Tim,
The hole is the same, however it is now less unkept looking. Now there is a long bunker that stretches from short and wraps around the entire left side. On the right there are a series of bunkers. Like I said, same hole, but just a lot more grass and the bunkering is now more formalized.
Here is what it looks like now from space!

Matt-Thanks for the over head view. I figured there would be more grass but I am partial to the original look!

I have an original copy of this book; I obtained it from the estate of my estranged maternal grandfather, whom I only met once on his deathbed.

A fascinating read. I think it is interesting that even then, RTJ Sr. is a controversial figure, and there does seem to be a nostalgia for the golden age with some lamentations about the contemporary (for that time) styles of design.

There sure wasnt many "World" courses in the Top 100 back in the 70's ?

That's because it is a top 100 American list.
