So, how often do you water your lawn?
« on: July 09, 2012, 05:54:53 PM »
Inspired by Pat Mucci's response on another thread, I ask this question.  How and how often do you water your lawn, wherever you are in the US?

Personally, unless out of town, I never use automatic sprinklers that I have.  I use the old fashioned water method of going to get the paper, and if the lawn crunches under my bare feet, I water that night.

So far this year in Texas, I have watered exactly three times, and its July.  My lawn is greener than most, and as green as any.  Save for a few weeds, I might have the best lawn in the neighborhood.

Meanwhile, many neighbors use their automatic systems to water about 5 minutes per night.

Obviously, its a pet peeve of mine, and I try to water as little as possible.  How many of you actively try to minimize your water useage?

Here in Toronto I have two irrigation systems, one for the front and one for the back that do lawns and flower beds.  I usually run them 4 days per week but with the current heat they're every day.  In my neghborhood this year it is very easy to see who has irrigation and who doesn't.

One big water every 4-5 days will be better than 5 mins every night. Promotes root growth. Deep and Infrequent :)

Jeff:

Hardly ever -- but here in Wisconsin, we rarely get droughts.

Except for the past month-and-a-half, when it's rained a third of an inch. I water our (very small -- 20-feet x 10-feet) vegetable garden, and my wife's flowers, but that's about it. Truly fast and firm right now in southern Wisconsin!

Jeff, do you have Bermuda?  I water at least once a week here in Annapolis. Lat week I watered more with temps above 100.

Jeff,

I think the hard part of not watering your lawn is how the lawn looks when you initially turn off the water, until the lawn adapts.

I think the same is true of golf courses, it's the initial transition that's traumatic to the membership.

If every committee, board and membership could visit Newport and Maidstone, maybe we'd make some progress.

I usually never water at all ... I planted fescue in the lawn when we moved to the new house, and it's worked like a charm.  My next-door neighbor waters damn near every day, but his lawn doesn't look better than ours.

However, over the past month the city has torn up the front 25 feet of my lawn in the course of rebuilding our street and right of way, so I've got the sprinkler running as we speak, trying to grow it back in.

If every super had the benefit of a dense rolling fog wandering over their golf course as often as it does at Newport and Maidstone, less water would be used  8)

We don't water our centipede lawn. Water just encourages it to grow and then it needs to be cut. No need to encourage it, when it rains it'll grow sure enough.

I like my lawn like I like my golf courses - brown and crusty...

Seriously, I never water them. I figure if they cannot survive naturally in this environment (PNW where water is plenty), they do not deserve to live anyway.

Everyday but I don't walk on it either.  Saw some kids last night eyeing the possibility of encroaching our property and was quickly turning into that guy that I use to love to hate.  Thank God that they didn't smell me standing behind the door loaded for bear.  It would have been an epic chase where the end could not have been good for me.  If anything bothers me most about getting old it is the predictability of it all.

At my old place in Utah, I used to water 3 times per week....which was very minimal.  Most of my neighbors watered every day.

The problem is, it gets so dry and so hot there being in the desert, you can literally lose your entire lawn over a few days if you aren't paying attention and forget to water.

Absolutely never, I hope it all dies and I never have to cut it ever again!

When it's this hot out? Everyday for maybe 30-45min. I don't play golf on my lawn, so I like it wet, green, and slow :)

It's a lot harder to gauge how much water my vegetable garden needs. Especially in this heat there is a fine line between not enough water and too much. Although with the hot weather we're having everything is growing especially well and is well ahead of schedule.

My sprinkers are programmed to run 12 minutes per zone 3 times a week, but I use them less than half of that time. Mainly just when on vacation. My two year old loves to drag the hose around to any "yellow" spots, he's the best grounds crew I have!

This is why I love my apartment, don't have to water and when I walk the dog she craps in the doggie area and Pedro picks it up.

I'm with the nevers...and live in South GA. Centipede, Bahia and Carpetgrass are my natural favorites that don't need water generally.
