Mark,

Thanks for the tour.

I'm in the area and, if the weather cooperates, I'll be there Monday morning and give it a ride.

Those who have spent time in Ohio (Hills country), where does Longaberger rank among the state's best publics? How about among Hills' designs?

For me, it's top 10, but towards the middle tier. I prefer Boulder Creek, Sleepy Hollow, Fowlers Mill, The Quarry, and Stonelick Hills over Longaberger.

I think it's top ranking came when the course first open, spent a lot of money on conditioning, and would sell out of tee-times early in the season. Nowadays, it's a lot easier to access. Still one of the best publics in the state, but I don't think it's the best.

There are some pretty beefy transitions. 9 to 10 has a pretty far transition. The last thing I'd want to do is walk up 17's cart path to 18, only to have to walk that beast for the final hole.

As far as Hills courses go, I'm also pretty sure I like Shaker Run better. I know that course gets a lot of flack on this site, but I do find its holes more interesting than those at Longaberger.

Chris,

Pretty scary if you really consider Boulder Creek better than Longaberger.

Guys, Winding Hollow(Hills/N.Albany) has a better Bk/9 than Longaberger/Shaker and is approximately 50% cheaper.
A very good course!

I played a Longaberger a few years back and posted about it on GCA.  I have to say that I was surprised that I had the same thoughts about the par 3's....they are bland.

Looking back at that round, I remember too many forced carries as well.  And I will agree that the conditions were very lush.  That might be by design, or that might be the result of several low lying areas.

I hope you went to tom's ice cream bowl in zanesville afterwards.

My son is a student at nearby Denison in Granville and I snuck over for a round one day.

Fairways are mostly generous, interesting angles into greens and nice views.  I agree the range is crummy, a big pit and you are at the bottom.  Bet there is swamp or water behind the tee and bugs in the summer especially since it is sheltered from wind.

It is what you would expect, big course, hilly, angular and pretty good for a modern Hills or Fazio type course.  You could walk it, but it would really be a tough slog, marginally walkable at best.  From Granville east to Pa / W Virginia is really hilly, rolling terrain.

Not really any character like the little Donald Ross Granville Golf Course nearby which has some really cool old greens.  A few holes on the back have been re-done to accomodate homes.  Worth playing and more walkable than Longaberger, one tough hill up and down twice on the back.   Easier on the wallet, too and Granville is a charming little town.

By the way, dinner or lunch at Longaberger is a good alternative to Granville restaurants during crowded Parents Weeekend.  Decent but not great food, the clubhouse setting at the top of the hill is fun.  And you could get a round of putting in like I did with my son waiting for our order.

Chris;

Good list, though I am no big fan of Boulder. Quarry is likely my #1 public. I also really enjoyed Black Diamond up in the hills north of Longaberger, but that is my fetish for the three-dimensional course.  I was not a fan of Granville, but I did enjoy Winding Hollow.

Still, I wish you [Chris] would do a description of The Quarry. Really some fun stuff there.

I played Longaberger early this morning as a twosome with my wife. The course was not busy and I understand that business is off from the early days of the course. We played in approximately 3 hours. Could have been quicker but playing a course for the first time is always an adventure. Not a walking course IMO. The course was in very good condition. Rough was up and thick. Greens were quick. Don't be above the hole.

As indicated above, the fairways are quite generous presenting some good angles into the greens.  It is a "big course" with lots of elevation changes. Perhaps it is Hills tribute to Fazio.

I liked the par5 and par3 holes. as they presented scoring opportunities. The strength of the course lies in the par4s. I particularly liked the controversial 8th.

I tried to make a comparison with Bedford Springs in PA since both courses are #1 Public Access in their respective states according to the GW raters. Both are fine courses. My vote goes to Bedford Springs because of the character issue. It's just a more fun course to play.

Anyone who has played both care to comment on Longaberger v. Bedford Springs?

Let me dig up my photos from The Quarry and I'll see what I can do.

Obviously the two courses have some contrasting styles given the differences in topography and when they were built.  But I would say both courses have strong par 4s, although I think I prefer the short par 4s on Bedford Springs over the ones at Longaberger.  I would give bedford the nod on par 3s as well, especially if/when the volcano hole is playing longer.  the par 5's may also be a push, but longaberger probably loses points for lack of creativity around the greens (how many par 5s with water next to the hole do you need?)  So I'll go with bedford, even though I'm a bit biased
