So is number 3 basically the Cypress Point hole 16 of Hawaii?

Mark

I haven't played enough of the Hawaiin course to know the answer, but to my knowledge Hawaii enjoys a large collection of ocean-carrying par 3s (see Challenge at Lanai, Bay Course at Kapalua, Mauna Lani's South Course, etc.)

10th tee. Palms left. Bushes masking the beach just to the right. Those playing from the tips must have a fade in their bag.

A suspiciously pock-marked palm tree.

A really bad miss to the left may offer an easier approach/lay-up than a smaller miscue.

The long approach to the 10th on the more conventional line.

The lay-up area could be easier, and a skillful wedge will still be required for the next.

I agree, while not having posted a compliment lately.  Kyle takes outstanding photos!  Between Kyle and Saltzman, no need for us amateur shutterbugs to take any more photos, since it seems these two gents will get to every course of any significance, at any rate!   ;D

Is this the course they have the four major winners (if they all show up) play the silly season match?

No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

Thank you for the compliment, Sir Daley, but I no not even come close to Saltzman's torrid pace of course exploration. Rather, I travel for a week or two and release my photos at a slow trickle. For example, these photos were taken 11 months ago. Next year, med school will permit a whopping 10 days of vacation, so you might see a few shots from my local muni course.

There are a number of par 3 holes in Hawaii over the ocean but this one has the length as the 16th at CPC.  I would say it's quite a bit harder as well.

Par is a very tall order for either hole, but Mauna Kea's 3rd  allows for one to bail out anywhere right or long while CPC's 16th requires one to be on line (and never short!!!) as left and right of the green can be problematic. Wouldn't  you agree?

This hole looks longer and better than I remember it. Did they take out trees behind the green?

11th is a beautiful hole but I always felt the green was way too small. It's both too small a target for a long-ish downhill hole where the wind is always blowing, and it always just seems out of proportion small with the enormity of the vista beyond the green.

I have no idea if trees were removed, Sean. It wouldn't surprise me if Rees added length to the back tees when he redid the course a few years ago. If so, this would exacerbate Matthew's complaint about the green's diminutive scale with respect to the distance of the approach.

Matthew, it is a very tough target. I failed to find the surface with all 4 tries, 2 of which were briefly on the green (don't tell the marshall). As a set, I can think of few tougher short-hole collections.

12th tee: As at #10, a fade is preferred from the tips, and hopes of an ocean-side hole are squelched by multimillion-dollar lodgings.

An overview of #12 from the 11th tee. Mauna Loa dominates the horizon.

12th landing zone.

Fairway bunkers are set to collect the un-faded. The firm, elevated green is an elusive target, even after a proper drive.

My first love in Hawaii. ;D  In the pics she looks to be holding up quite well.  On more recent trips to the islands I have enjoyed playing some of the younger tracks, but to me, Mauna Kea will always be special.

Thanks for the great thread.  I love the look of the course.

It's a pretty spot to be sure and there are some very good holes. Hawaiian golf is pretty expensive on the whole, and this course justifies the expenditure much more so than many of its similarly priced neighbors. I might caution beginners that they could be in for a long day, as the course seems geared for play by golfers with above-average aptitude for the game.

You were certainly there on a lovely day, it seems. How windy was it?

Good point about the cost of golf in Hawaii. There are a few courses that justify the cost. What's discouraging is how many other courses that come nowhere close where the costs are nearly as high. For example, today you can tee it up at Kapalua's Plantation Course for $268. Sure, that's a lot of scratch, but it is by any definition a world class course in a wonderful spot in a place where nothing is cheap. Kapalua's Bay Course would run you $60 less to play today, but the quality of golf there ... for $208. it just doesn't compare. (Then there's the $249 non-resort guest rate for Kaanapali. What??)

Kyle, great photos, you made the course look very good. So that's what resort golf is like. It looks like loads of "FUN" fitting the definition that everyone has been assessing to "FUN".

277 yds par 3, if you didn't play it did you at least walk back and give it a test drive?

Is that you in the photo of the par 3? Let me guess your other sport is either football (linebacker) or MMA?

Matthew, I agre whole-heartedly. I was first out, with 5-10 mph breezes at most.

David, that is me in the silly hat. I drove into in the left bunker from the back plate on #3. I played OT and DT for my high school football team (at 170-180 lbs) before the golf bug bit in.
