Augusta National - How Much Would You Pay???
« on: June 10, 2012, 08:53:55 PM »
Hey Gang,

Augusta National is probably the course that most golfers dream about playing the most.  The reality is that most of us will likely never have an opportunity to play it.  If the opportunity came up, how much would you REALISTICALLYbe willing to pay for one round?

Lets assume that airfare, hotels, etc. are comp’ed so those who live in other countries or longs distances away are not disadvantaged.
As for me I have to say that I probably would not be able to pay more than $1000 for a round.   I have paid some expensive rounds before but I just cant imagine paying more than $1000.  On the other hand I have a few friends that claim they would be willing to get a divorce or go bankrupt for one opportunity to play this gem.  Now I am sure (or I hope) they are joking but I am curious what someone would REALISTICALLY be willing to pay for one shot at playing “Amen Corner”.  This should be fun

Bob, so if someone offered you a round at Augusta for $1050, you'd say no?

I'll play as a guest.  And I'll pay the guest fee. That may never happen.  Or it may.  In the mean time, there are plenty of courses I want to play.

Let's be real.  At the end of the day, it's still just a golf course .

Of course I'd love to play, but groveling stinks.  So does paying a sinful amount.

This is probably more of a funciton of how much money one has instead of interest in seeing the course. I'm sure there are those who don't care if they see it, but the majority that does the interest is there. For the wealthy, spending a few thousand to see Augusta might be worth it. For others, the regular guest fee plus travel expenses would be a big expense.

I would think a big part of the Augusta experience would be to spend a couple days playing and hanging around.  I suppose that is more unlikey than just playing it which is remote enough.  A acquientence got to play it last year through his job when somebody higher up dropped out or wasn't a golfer.  He works for Transamerica and I believe one of their big execs is a member?

I don't know if I'll be able to express this correctly, but paying to play Augusta seems crass. I can't believe that anyone in a position to offer an invitation to visit ANGC would associate that with money.

Of course, I would forever be in that person's debt and be willing to help them with any 'problem' they may have at some future date.   ;D

Gentlemen

This discussion is going in a direction that I did not intend.   :'(  Lets think of it in another way.  If Augusta was a public course.....what would be a reasonable rate that  the majority of golfers would pay to play this track????

What course has the highest green fee in America? Is it Pebble? I think I'd pay about the same to play Pebble as I would Augusta. What's the current fee, $500ish?

Sam,

Irrespective of our evaluation of ANGC and PBGC, I think PBGC would command a higher fee.

Tough to beat that setting/feature, especially when it integrates with the course on 9 holes

Perfect, maybe I can get on Augusta for about $250 then!

Somebody just paid over $3 million to have lunch with Warren Buffett, so I'm sure that among the types of people who have $3 million to drop on a lunch, if they liked golf they'd be willing to pay that for a round at ANGC.  Of course, if they have that kind of money, they probably have the connections to get on the course (and have their host fly them there on their private jet)  Sometimes it sucks being in the 99%  8)

£1000 seems the popular figure when we discuss this subject with my friends. Obviously some people will pay more and some could not afford. I heard something that there was an April fools joke many years back that ANGC were offering 1 4 ball per day at $10,000 and that in just one day there were enough enquiries to fill several years. I think 10K would probably be a good/fair commercial rate.

If I envisage a price above US$500 for Augusta National, I just begin to think about the experiences I could have for the same money.

Nine rounds at St Andrews Beach.
Three full days' golf at Barnbougle Dunes.
Eight full days playing Silloth.
Seven days playing The Addington.
A year's "second-club" membership at Paraparaumu Beach GC.

So should I find myself invited by a member, I would lie awake at night for a month with excitement, but I can't understand pledging four or five notes for a round if money is an object -- as it is for most of us -- there are just too many incredible experiences to have for much less than $500, $1000 or $5000.

I wouldn't pay any more than the max I'd pay for other courses on my wish list. I've never thought about ANGC in the same way as others on this DG do. That fact that it's exclusive isn't a big deal with me. I'd prefer to play Royal Membourne, TOC, Muirfield, Pine Valley, Shinny, and Sunningdale so maybe my max would be about £200-£300.

If I were given the opportunity to play ANGC for a price, I'd be happy to pay 100% of what's in my savings account. No telling how much it is, but it ain't much!  ;D

I would pay $1000 per month for the rest of my life to be have the talent to earn the right and to play in the Masters just one year.  I have never played Pebble Beach because I thought I might one day qualify to play there in a tournament.  That hasn't worked out very well.  As a matter of fact the USGA wrote me a letter requesting that I quit trying.

Wouldn't it be great to show up to a course and have people say.."That guy played in the Masters one year, what the hell happened to his game?"
